  2. Re: Quit hatin' on my old, trashy trap cones..lololol

Thanks Pat, great video, and education. I was wondering if the queen would come out, along with everyone else in a trap out. Now I know it doesn't always happen. Thanks again for sharing!

Re: Not enough honey stored; what to do?

I'm giving my hives Dadant Winter Patties, I neglected to make Lauri's sugar bricks this year. Usually I make Lauri's bricks and give each hive enough to cover about 3/4 of the frames. This year I...
  4. Re: Sweet Success! 1st time collecting honey.

Always fun to extract and see all that honey. Interesting how the honey varies from year to year too. Last year my honey was dark, this year it is all light.

    Re: can't believe it.. honey!

Thanks for the video, but how deep do you go when you 'peel' off the cappings. I did scratch them off, first year I'd used a cappings scratcher and not a knife. I'm filtering the honey as it comes...

Re: Took a chainsaw to these bees!!!

Sorry, but I'm too much of a novice to give you an informed opinion. I've NEVER collected an open swarm, let alone a cut out. I think you did the right thing, at least from the video it looks like...

    Re: Honey Extraction

I set mine out about 100 yards away from the hives, let the bees clean up what honey is left in it, then I hose it out with warm water.

    Re: Honey Extraction

I've 4 hives, just a hobbyist. I have to haul my extraction equipment out of storage, and set it up every time I extract, so I wait till late July early August to extract, and extract all the frames...
  10. Re: diy solar cappings melter for under $50 and better than factory

Thanks for the great idea, I'll make one for myself this summer.

That WAS really cool, thanks for sharing!
  12. Re: Entrance in middle of Langstroth hive?

Don't use a shim, you'll get brood in between the boxes. I learned the hard way, what a MESS! Maybe just drill a hole in one of the deeps, plug it with a cork when not in use in the winter maybe. ...

Re: Why did they kill the queen?

You may not have been able to prevent it. I did 2 splits a few years ago, shortly after introducing the new queens, they replaced both of them.

  15. Re: Ants in Yard....Bee friendly treatment options?

What kind of ants are they?? When I started bee keeping, I was all worried about the ants we have around. I've formic ants, they're pretty big, and they make HUGE mounds. I'd watch them around and...

    Re: 1st Honey Super

I do the same as sr73087, when the top box is pretty much full, and I see a band of honey on top of those frames, I add the super.

Re: What are these bees doing ??????

Hard to tell, pictures kinda blurry, but if they're honey bees, maybe someone peed there, and they're after that. My bees are all over my horse pee spots, and where ever the dogs pee. If not honey...

    Re: Strengthening a weak hive

Wouldn't leaving the nurse bees on the frame of brood help, the hive getting the donated frames won't kick out, or fight with the nurse bees will they? I've a similar situation, and was thinking of...

    Re: Warming Honey Supers

Hmm, Are some of the days in September sunny? Is it still fairly warm in the daytime in September? What I do is, I put the supers in my car, but I only have 4 hives, and usually, only 4 supers. ...

Re: Getting queen to move out of super

Just buy more mediums, leave the medium you have as part of the hive now, as part of the hive. Like you said, that medium of honey may have saved their cookie. I did the same thing my first year, I...

    Re: California Backyard Beekeeper

MiMi, if you haven't already get a good bee book, or two, or three. When I started out, about a year before getting any bees, I read: The Beekeeper's Handbook by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse...
