    Re: Holy Laying Worker, Batman!!

I have found it to be a waste of valuable resources to keep putting frames of eggs into a laying worker
hive. I used to try to save, but found it to deplete good hives. Combining with newspaper may...

    Re: New York

Don't think they are going to bloom this year. Read we are lucky to get 1 year out of 5 of nectar from the black locust.
  3. Re: seeking opinions about returning wet supers to hives after extracting

Agree with Groundhwg. I have experienced extreme wax moth damage with nothing in the cells.

    Re: MAQS vs. Formic Pro

I have also used both and agree with Aran. I believe the shelf life of Formic Pro is much longer.

    Re: Bear attack last night.

Is the ticking sound of each pulse common with the electric fence? Or is there something I should be looking into?

    Re: Bear attack last night.

Have also been hit 2 nights ago. Black bear destroyed 4 hives. Did not have a fence up to deter the bear.

Now have the electric fence up using ac powered Patriot P20 energizer. Put up 4 lateral...

Re: Is having only 1 hive manageable?

Thanks Ray. This configuration makes alot of sense, and worthwhile doing some experimenting in my apiary.
Seems to be that drawn super comb is a very valuable resource to give the queen room for...

Re: Is having only 1 hive manageable?

    Ray,

In the spring do you reverse the boxes and put the medium under the deep if they have moved up over the winter?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Re: Hive registration NYS at it again...

Boardrida is correct. Another bureaucracy of NYS government that will provide absolutely no benefit to bees or beekeepers.
Fees will continue to rise as all do in NYS.

    Re: Upstate NY Swarming????

First swarm today in the cedar tree.
  14. Re: Making a push cage- must it be hardware cloth?

It should be ridgid enough to be pressed into the comb quite far. I have found the workers will chew at the wax
to get underneath the screen to get at the queen.

Re: Southern New Yorker flow ???

In Pleasant Valley the flow has been on for a couple of weeks. Quite a few hives have 2 supers full with brood boxes backfilling with honey also.
Locust has been in bloom and honey is light in...

    Re: Upstate NY Swarming????

Two hives today had capped queen cells. One had 4 capped , the other had 1 capped and many with larvae and royal jelly.
Saw some eggs so I searched for the queen in each and found them both. Did a...

Re: Introducing a nuc to a queenless hive??

I have done the newspaper combine and worked. I would make sure there are not laying workers in the queenless hive or they might ball the queen.

Re: Hands sting....gloves not cutting it.

I started with the goatskin, then went to 5mil nitrile gloves, then mostly not using gloves at all. Found more of a feel not to crush and anger bees.
Another important factor was to work them very...

Re: I'm not sure what this is...

Could be the start of a queen cup. They make these often and sometimes tear them down. It becomes a queen cell when occupied by an egg, larvae. When occupied it could be in swarm preparation or a...

    Re: Question on Nuc's

I found 3/4 exterior ply works good. Less warpage due to interior moisture as well as external.

paint with a cheap paint and spray a clear coat of Flex-Seal, this product is very thick.
