  1. Re: How to do a Direct Introduction of a Laying Queen

My son messaged me, and I'm happy to report that the Italian queen on the frame that I inserted into the nuc is alive and well. So now to further research and refine the process!
  2. Re: How to do a Direct Introduction of a Laying Queen

grozzie, thank you for your reply. The difference I see, is your freshly made up nucs have no queen when made. Where as mine was made up using the old queen, which I later swapped out without...
  3. How to do a Direct Introduction of a Laying Queen

I was watching one of Michael Palmer's videos where he said a mated laying queen could be put directly into a hive with immediate acceptance because she has all the necessary scent of a laying queen....

Re: Out of Luck on Trying the Saskatraz Queens

JW said, "Several queens shut down cold in August 2018, and while some over-wintered and bred up this spring, several "faded away" or died after the shut-down.
    My assessment is these are...

    No More Misplaced Hive Tools

My Mann Lake Pro Vent bee jacket with hood has a side pocket with flap. I took a seem ripper and opened the end of the flap and inserted a K&J Magnetics style B-X0 30.5 lb. standard mounting magnet...

Maxant 6 GT Wax Tank Review Wanted

Looking for someone who owns this piece of equipment and can comment on how it does with wet cappings using the ball valve and as a honey tank using the no drip valve.
  8. Re: Wax Cappings, Maxant Spinner or 6 GT Wax Melter

Bdfarmer, thanks for your honest reply. In reading your comments, it sounds as though the jr. can be a little fussy to work with. I hate to spend that kind of money for a piece of fussy equipment. I...
  9. Wax Cappings, Maxant Spinner or 6 GT Wax Melter

I'm looking for the most efficient way to handle wax cappings. I was considering the Junior Spinner, but on reading comments regarding this unit, it seems there are a number of over loading comments...

    U.S. Distributor for Carricell Incubators?

Anyone know if there is a U.S. distributor for the portable Carricell Incubators?
  12. Re: Entrance Hole Above Excluder in Honey Super

    I believe a 7/8's hole and a #10 cork work together nicely.
  13. Entrance Hole Above Excluder in Honey Super

Is there any advantage during a strong flow to having an entrance hole in the honey super above the excluder to alleviate having the bees travel the entire distance of the hive from the bottom board...

Proper Use of a Support Nuc

Here in Michigan, early May finds us moving the queen from a winter survivor hive into a support nuc, giving way for the now queenless parent hive to rear a new young queen in time for the June honey...

Out of Luck on Trying the Saskatraz Queens

I had 4 Saskatraz queens scheduled for the 4th week of May from Olivarez, and they called up to tell me due to the rainy weather they have been getting that they wouldn't be able to fill my order...

Re: Initial Distance of First Flight

Tim, the "forbidden tree" was just a narrative to set the starting point for the question. I guess to rephrase the question into the most simplest of terms would be, how far does a swarm fly to...

    Initial Distance of First Flight

Lets assume for talking purposes, your neighbor has a bee tree on his property which is off limits to you, and this tree issues a swarm every year. You want to set-up a swarm trap to catch the...
  18. Saskatraz queens, How are They Building-up for You this Spring

Now that we're into the month of May, I was wondering if anyone had any comments on how their Saskatraz queens were doing this spring?
  19. Re: Cutting Out Queen Cells from Plastic Foundation

I think the whole idea is to be able to lift the cell without destroying the actual plastic frame. At the moment, I have wax foundation in my hives with boxes of Acorn foundation sitting in the barn...
  20. Re: Cutting Out Queen Cells from Plastic Foundation

JW, I just ordered one each of .016,.020,.025 and .031. $14 plus shipping which doesn't break the bank and they'll be here Tuesday. Now to find a cell on plastic!
  21. Re: Cutting Out Queen Cells from Plastic Foundation

JW, I have a 6" by 3/4" wide steel scale here on my desk, with a set of dial calipers, it measures .030 and then it's not too flexible. I'd like to try around .020 maybe to achieve the flexibility....
  22. Re: Cutting Out Queen Cells from Plastic Foundation

Under the link I provided above, look under Ready-to-Use Feeler Gauges. Most are 12" in length and 1/2" wide.
  23. Re: Cutting Out Queen Cells from Plastic Foundation

trottel1, I would think that anything hot would do harm to the queen in the cell. I was thinking more along the lines of using a thin feeler gauge blade, say .030 or less thick (depending on...
  24. Cutting Out Queen Cells from Plastic Foundation

I've been watching YouTube videos on how to cut out QC's with a razor knife from all wax foundation which is pretty straight forward. I have not seen any harvesting of QC's from plastic foundation...

When adding a frame or two of brood and nurse bees to a weak hive coming out of winter, we generally also add a syrup source for feed. How long does it take for the nurse bees to graduate to foragers...
