Re: XenTari on Wax Moth Infestation

I agree that Xentari controls wax moths very effectively on honey frames. It does not work as well on brood frames or frames that have pollen in them. It appears that on my frames that are sprayed,...

Re: Honey Harvest & Possible Swarm

I use ApiLife Var which is a thymol based treatment. For a few days after treatment, the bees mass on the front of the hive.

    Re: Swarm colony

    +1
Scrape off the errant comb and make sure your frames are pushed tightly together. Scrape off any propolis on the frames that prevents pushing tightly together.

    Re: New queen

How did you put the queen cage in the hive? The cage should be placed so that the workers have access to the queen through the screen. It is possible to suffocate the queen if you press the screen...

Re: Looking for a mentor in MA

Find a local club and attend the meetings. It is easier to find a mentor there.

    Re: Swarmed hives in trouble

Wait 7 - 10 more days before becoming alarmed.
  7. Re: hive not healthy; how to diagnose? Are there any labs doing diagnostic testing?

To me, it looks like a typical queenless hive where there are insufficient bees to feed larvae properly so they are weak when they emerge. The smell is dead bees in the cells that there are...

    Re: Jars From China

I don't know of any but I applaud your search to find an American replacement.
  9. Re: Black spots in bottom of screened board

I think you have too much open space and need to reduce the number of boxes. Assuming you have 10 frame boxes, I can't see how a nuc can go from 5 frames to 30 frames in 6 weeks.

Re: Hive Identification (People and Bees)

I am using the adhesive labels from Home Depot and paste then onto the cover. However, I found that the labels start losing the print after a year in the sun making it hard to see what it is. I...

    Re: Smoker Fuel

I would not want to use any petroleum product as a fuel for a smoker. It would be like putting your car's exhaust pipe right in the hive.

    Re: Smoker Fuel

Go to Walmart and get a bag of cedar chips for pet bedding and a blowtorch. Add a small handful of cedar chips in your smoker and use the blowtorch to get it burning. Once burning well, add a small...

    Re: Wax moths eradication?

In addition to killing wax moths, bug zappers are killing other insects that some night creatures use for food. Also, I doubt that setting up a bug zapper is going to keep wax moths from moving into...

    Re: Honey labels

i did the same. But I went to Sticker Giant and got 1000 3.5" oval labels pre-printed for about $110. If you have a non-standard shaped label, it will cost more. I was very happy with the results...

Re: Strange spherical cells on new hive

Are your frames pushed tightly together? If there is no room the bees will draw flat comb (most of the time). I would scrape off the errant comb, push the frames together and let them redraw. ...
  18. Re: New bee package all dead within two weeks of putting in hive.

Another treatment that I tried with some success is XenTari BT. If the frame you are spraying has no pollen in the cells, the BT works great. If there is pollen, nothing will stop the moths or SHB...
  19. Re: New bee package all dead within two weeks of putting in hive.

If I had to guess, I would say it was the moth balls. You should not use ordinary moth balls to prevent wax moths. Purchase a product called Para-Moth (https://www.mannlakeltd.com/para-mothr) to...

    Re: Tool bucket replacement ideas

I prefer the 5 gallon bucket with the bucket organizer sold by Mann Lake https://www.mannlakeltd.com/beekeeper-s-bucket-organizer.
The only bad thing about it is that it raises the center of gravity...
  22. Re: Got viciously attacked today when observering hive

My brother had one. It was very cute when small. It would keep stealing his watch and keys and hide them. As it got older, it got more aggressive and he had to get rid of it.

    Re: HELP! Very Lethargic Package

I am willing to bet if you introduce another queen and cull the current queen, the bees will supercede the new queen within a month. IMHO, assuming the nuc you purchased are Italian bees,...
