Re: Dead mouse in empty honey storage bucket

How many customers would buy the honey from a beekeeper if he said he bottled it from a sanitized 5 gallon pail that formerly had a recently dead mouse and poop in?

    Really, you can't throw one...

It has been a soggy Wisconsin in May and June so far. May was on the cold side and June has been hot. Lots of rain and wind with storms.

Fellow Wisconsinites (or others with weather issues), how...

    Re: Propolis questions

Propolis is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal inside and outside of the body. Make sure there is no allergy to bees or bee products.

We add the powdered propolis to honey and eat that. ...

    Re: Bees Attacking

I have read on beesource where other beeks recommended piano or guitar wire slid between both boxes.

Re: How did you react to your first stings?

My first stings were 3 for apitherapy.

Itched like a monkey! lol The sting sites got red, slightly swollen and there was a little heat.

  8. Re: New beek, question about placement of Queen excluder

I recall reading a post on Beesource where the beek would cut up a plastic queen excluder and just tack a piece over the entrance. It was very easy to remove after a few days. He used this method...

    Re: Apitherapy for herniated disc?

Teal, as I recall you were into essential oils. Those will also benefit you in dealing with inflammation and pain.

Frankincense is a go to oil as you probably know. Lots of health problems are...

    Re: Apitherapy for herniated disc?

This is personal experience only and not medical advice.

My husband had a ruptured herniated disc. He was in extreme pain and saw a chiropractor on an emergency basis. He crawled on his hands...

  13. Re: Meade on "Ask This Old House" Season 15 episode 11

I have some high moisture honey that has been in the fridge. I have the yeast that was shown in the episode.

My question is: Do I need nutrient or can I get away with leaving that out?
  14. Re: So, what did you scrounge today? Braggin encouraged

Have been snagging wood pallets. Even the daughters are using the wood for their pinterest projects. The future son-in-law made a headboard from pallet boards. Looks good.

    Also got a 4x6 solar...

    Re: Votive help

    minz,

I use flex molds and never have used the metal ones. I use bobby pins clamped on the wick and slid gently to the mold edge to help keep it centered while the wax cools. Of course, the flex...

Re: What Price Should I Sell A Pint of Honey For

Hobbyist here. Harvested in July and August this year. These two honeys are different tasting, both light in color. Local, raw and strained only. One tastes a bit like caramel and the other is...

    Re: Votive help

You are pouring too hot for a votive. Are you pouring these into glass containers? Don't wait so long to top it off.

Your first pour should be at where you want the candle to end up at. The...

  19. Re: Saponification? Burned wax? Or just dirty wax?

If you let your wax cool to solid and touch/taste the brown stuff, you will know if it is honey or not...............sticky or sweet.

I wonder why you have to keep your wax melted for an hour when...
  20. Re: beeswax looks like it's separating into wax and brown something

    ..............................

No, all I am saying is when you filter to have it drip into a pan of distilled water rather than just collect it into an empty pan.

    Do the candles smell sweet...
  21. Re: beeswax looks like it's separating into wax and brown something

Your wax has something in it. Maybe even honey. If you do what I said that will take care of slum gum, honey, pollen, propolis or whatever is in the wax.

Filtering takes care of the solids,...
  22. Re: beeswax looks like it's separating into wax and brown something

Several things can be going on here. A picture would help.

It sounds like dirty wax to me and the source could be things you mentioned or even minerals from the hard water if that is what you...

Re: Liquid remaining after melting wax

Giving the cappings to the bees is a way to glean the honey off for the benefit of the bees or the beekeeper to reharvest.
It would be more difficult for those who are dealing with many hives or a...

Re: Liquid remaining after melting wax

We put our cappings in the attic of each hive for the bees to clean off first. When the cappings are cleaned off, we will then process that beeswax. We have also put the honey cappings in the...

Re: Refractometer - honey has low reading

Thanks Flower Planter. Both honeys were room temperature and in same room as refractometer.

I also wondered if being "raw and strained" only made a difference in the readings. I have a very...
