    Re: Ants emptied one box

Probably right Greg, but I figured the OP needs help and thought that all bees probably have the same instinct to raise brood. Who knows? Who knows as far as the ants too, but some of the ant ideas...

Re: open feeding in winter zone 5b

Look up Lauri"s sugar bricks if you are concerned that they don't have enough food for the winter. Follow the recipe. Its very simple to do. J

    Re: Ants emptied one box

In the future, if you have another hive, put a frame or two of brood in. It usually "locks" them into their hive. But it sounds like they were determined to leave. J

  6. Re: How many OAV treatments in winter can they tolerate?

As has been stated by BDT123, OAV at any time of the year will not kill your hive. However, if you only treated once in November and did not use any other treatments before that, your hive may die...
  7. Re: Bee recovery after bear attack (November 21)

Did you address the fence weakness? If not, all your efforts will be in vain because its likely the bear will be back. Call your game warden and ask if its legal to bait your fence. If it is (or if...

    Re: Buckets or Jars?

I am assuming the OP is a small time hobbyist based on his post. I wouldn't spend $100 on a bucket blanket when I could bottle it up now and if it crystallizes, put as many jars in the dishwasher as...
  9. Re: Advice for sealing concrete floor extraction room

I have not had any sealer hold up well on my sidewalks and patio, so I will not recommend one. However, whatever sealer you use, add some shark grip or similar product which will make the floor less...

    Re: Buckets or Jars?

Put it in jars. It will be a lot easier to de crystallize. Its only anybody's guess as to how long before it re-crystallizes again unless you heat it above a certain temp. The temp escapes me. J

    Re: Still too many mites

Randy Oliver is conducting ongoing experiments with OAV extended release" shop towels". Pray tell why you take his research with a grain of salt because of that. Most would say he is doing us a great...

    Re: Still too many mites

As I said, timing of treatments depends on location. But the bee and mite cycles still matter where you are. If you see no reason why, read some Randy: scientiificbeekeeping.com

    Re: Still too many mites

Not pointing to anyone in particular, but I do think that it is critical to know the mite cycle and the bee cycle and to treat at the right time. This will differ by location of course. It is tricky...

Re: Bees still crowding bird baths

If you aren't adding pollen sub or feeding sugar in small amounts which can stimulate brooding, then they will determine when to shut off brooding so I wouldn't worry about it. But it does appear...

They fill the metal ones too. Put them in the freezer and then clean with hive tool or putty knife. I find that the plastic ones are easier to clean because you can bend them and the wax and propolis...

Re: best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

Another vote for the paint cans. Cheap, effective and no beetle issues. Also good for storing left over syrup. I just put a piece of painters or duct tape over the holes and it stays fresh until...

Re: Bee with torso up stinger out like a scorpion?

A couple people have said that the bees reaction is because its cold. The OP said it was 60f. I think that most people in the northern climes would consider 60f perfectly warm enough for bees. I...

She was reacting to your headlamp. You are asking for trouble opening a hive at night with a light unless its a red light. J
