Re: What caused this? Multiple choice - easy

When I clicked on the thread, I had in my mind "It's gonna be either varroa or a bear." I think I can eliminate varroa on this one. Wait, to be sure - when did you test last? What is your treatment...
  2. Re: Retiring from Beekeeping -- Used equipment for sale

If you were within a 100 miles of me, I'd be all over this. GLWS!
  3. Re: Moving frames from one hive to another

No problem if it is warm enough to open the hive, and assuming you are setting it up in the same location.
  4. Re: amazingly stoopid mistake; so, can I kiss my honey super's harvest adieu?!

If you did anything other than dribble directly into the super, I would not lose any sleep over havesting the honey for my own use.
  5. Re: Another hobbyist building question, improved box-box sealing with silicone bead?

When the gaps are bigger than I like and the bees haven't propolized them yet, I duct tape the joints outside.
  6. Re: Is it time to take insulation off of my hives

I take mine off when it is a hassle to leave it on. In other words, when the temperatures have moderated enough to where I am going into the hives on some regular basis, then it is clear the...

Re: Things I WON'T get done this year

    * I won't be buying the tractor I was planning.
    * I won't be doing the road trip to Alaska.
    * I won't be advancing much on the Stinson Voyager (airplane) rebuild project.

    And, I might not be...

Re: How to inspect with less protective gear

I almost always wear a full suit with smoker, and feel no need to do less. Life is more pleasant when both I and the bees are calm.

Re: syrup specs for feeding (1:1 and 2:1)?

Rest easy, mix 2:1 either by weight or volume, and feed it to them when they need it. Spring, fall, whatever. It works.

Re: Caution about opening hives in winter?

Cold is mostly temporary, starvation is permanent. Pretty simple really.

I took one apart when I found there were mice in it this winter. I would have to have a reason like that to do so, but...

Re: Too much winter feed left, what to do?

Just to make sure it is heard - pull the excluder.

I'd leave the feed for now, it can always be removed later.

Re: Formic Pro and Your Health

I use no protection other than gloves for either acid. Not a recommendation to anyone else, just stating my choice.

Re: 2020 How was your winter?

Well, warm spell, checked them (just quickly lifted the top). Of 11 hives of various configurations, one is almost certainly dead, two show more than normal poop on the front. Added sugar to some...
  16. Re: Another recipe for making propoplis salve or lip balm

I made a salve that I gave away as Christmas presents this year. Sorry, the recipe is not in front of me, but it contained coconut oil, olive oil, beeswax, vitamin E oil, jajoba oil, and propolis...

    Re: Building vs. Buying

I don't find it worthwhile to build, but I assemble precut stuff in the winter, for my use or to sell on CL.

Re: How to keep within your (newbee) limit

First year, it is not my experience that a nuc grows into more than a full hive. Second year is a different story, assuming sucess.

Re: Treated lumber for hive stand

I use treated for hive stands. I have not noticed any problem. I would not use treated for the hive bottom.

    Re: Mead?

I got one for Christmas, I am pretty sure my wife got it on Amazon for less than 30 bucks. It works fine, and seems like a nice unit.

Re: 2020 How was your winter?

It's not over yet. But today was warm (42) so I went out to OAV treat the 11 hives. All have some live bees in them. One had mice, now it doesn't. About half sent a few guards out to challenge me,...

    Raspberry Melomel

This is what I started today.

    Goal

    OG 1.100
FG: 1.015 (after back-sweetening, will probably ferment dry)
Plan: Ferment in primary to 13-14%, add fruit to start secondary. Ferment dry to...

Re: My first Melomel - elderberry mead

Working on my last bottle of this now, it is SO GOOD! Fruity taste in the mouth, with a bit of a burn in the back of the mouth after swallowing. That is about as sophisticated as I get when...
