If you're on facebook.
With all the bee schools, meetings and conferences being cancelled; university and extension educators have moved to the web.
Sure beats watching Oprah reruns.
It's all in the math and the management
An average Q lays between 1500-2000 eggs per day. 2000 x21days is 42000 brood cells before the first egg emerges as an adult.
There are aprox 4500 cells...
Keep an eye on your hives.Already hearing reports of sealed drone brood in central CT and I'm expecting an early swarm season.
I would think that one would need some sort of a pressure relief valve so the when the nozzle was off ,the syrup would recirculate back to the tank.
Most trash pumps I have worked with have a flow...
A shame to see such evil in this world.
I walked into one of my yards last year right as a hive was swarming. It settled low in a tree about 15 ft away.I just happened to have my swarm collecting box in the van so I took a frame of open...
Since all the action in a colony happens between the frames I don't know what you expect to see.
You could try ceiling tile staples in your T50 stapler.I have not used them in Advantech but find they penetrate hard pine and trim coil better than the standard staples. They don't collapse.
Would not hurt to call some local pkg dealers.
Many of them also bring up Qs when they pick up pkgs.
You could requeen later with a Rus Q
Would not hurt to call one of these guys either.They...
The best pro-active treatment would be to educate your neighbor.
Call 'em up.I needed end bars for mann lake frames to make half frames. Not in catalog or on web site.
Sales person on the phone had to search but found them.
I'm hearing more and more beekeepers say they are no longer using brood comb from deadouts.Deadouts are a great opportunity to get rid of any old comb.
Clayton, there is a lot of info out there.A quick google of "fecal / oral transmission of honey bee virus" brought up this 16 yr old but still relevant study plus many others.(the authors are still...
Cconnell gives some excellent information.
However,as a first year beek,I would suggest that you first learn the rhythm of a colony.Swarming is the natural reproduction of a colony and occurs when...
With the cheap cost of mis-tints at name paint stores($5-8 gal) I hardly think it's worth the cost. The cut edges of cdx is worth coating with titebond glue.
I'm just south of Springfield and I shoot for end of April ,first week in May.This spring seems to be earlier than usual so I will put them out earlier.Later than that I'm dealing with other bee work.
Like you say,you could remove sealed syrup from honey super and replace with foundation.
Freeze syrup frames and use as feed next winter in the brood med. Or use to make splits.
" Nothing new under the sun, or, maybe I should spend a few minutes googling before posting questions"
From one who's been around a while:
If every poster did that, the forums would...
Lloyd,do you have candy in the cage and will it dry out?
Assuming from you description you are using wooden cages.Benton or california?
Easier to cut the boxes down to mediums.
You could then use a slice of the cut off to extend the shallows to 6 5/8.
Pull the nails along the cut line first, wear a good pair of safety glasses and...
It has been recommended to me by a Rus breeder to delay Q introduction by placing a strip of tape over the candy hole for 3-4 days.
That or a push in cage.
Works every time.
I believe the issue is not number of frames but whether or not you have adequate ventilation.I think the formic vapors are heavier than air.
Last year or the year before at Mass Beek field day,Tom...
We should be careful about sharing recently published copywrited material without permission. The authors are usually very generous about sharing their material with individuals and I would hate to...
Jim,glad to see you are alive and well and still awake.
I always thought that with your vast knowledge, you would develop a beekeeper subscription service that would track everything and send me an...
