  1. Re: Random queen appears in nuc made on created on Saturday.

Same thing happened to me about three weeks ago. I split a fairly strong hive. The original queen was a very dark, long queen and I left her in the original hive. 5 days later the nuc has a laying...

Re: Requeening with Apivar in hive

    Re: Nuc Plans

Me too. Propolis buildup can make them get tight. I always forget to do frame scraping/maintenance and it makes for a tight fit.

Dead virgin queen outside of hive

So I checked one of my nucs with queen cells to see if they had hatched and the two queen cells were still closed at 4:45pm. At 9:30 pm I walked by the hive and shined a light on it and saw a dead...

    Re: Mite treatment

Has anyone proven there is a resistance to Apivar? Just wondering what your answer means. I have heard Apistan has some mite resistance. Planning to treat soon and want a non oxalic method for the...
  7. Re: Next door farm using roundup, will it hurt my bees?

    Re: Should I split?

Throw a frame of open brood in the box and get it as close to the swarm as possible? Hard to do that high up. I lost a few like that. Could not get a ladder that high or the box close enough.

Re: game plan for inspections now?

This is important. Mine build cells sticking out and sometimes when lifting a frame it tears a cell. I have learned to verify the cells are being built and then close them up until calendar says shes...

    Re: upstate SC flow?

I have had reports that they are still flying strong in that region. At least in the mornings. It is over here in the midlands for the most part. U are probably a few weeks behind us at least.
  11. Re: is moving a split into a deep time-sensitive (time-o-day)?

I have never worried about the time of day. I would think it is better with the foragers out. Less bees to shake out of the box after I move the frames. Put the entrance as close to the original as...
  12. Re: Back-up batter as power source for oxalic acid vaporizer

I have heard they work fine for running a vaporizer. I haven't used one, but Plan to in the future.

    Re: LW breakdown

Full of drone brood? Freeze them and stick them back on a strong hive. They will clean out and keep the comb. Or just freeze them for the honey and keep until they need it. If it is clean you can do...

Re: Downside to leaving a laying worker hive?

Good to know what the best position should be. I had read up on it and did not catch that part.

Re: Downside to leaving a laying worker hive?

I just threw a laying worker hive on top a strong double deep seperated by a single screen. In a few weeks I will check to see if the laying workers are suppressed and then combine them if...

Re: Mis-matched frame sizes in a hive body

Got a hive now with some mediums scattered in a deep box. They have brood in it. Might switch it out later and rubber band the extra comb. Nice and straight.
  17. Re: Combining some bees from stronger hive to weaker

Add capped brood from the strong hive or you could switch the hives and get a stronger foraging force. I vote for the capped brood Approach. You do need to figure out why she is a slow builder. Or...

Re: 10 hives, how large an extractor?

Maxant 20 frame. You won't regret it, if you can manage it. Quality machine, but large. I have issues with storing it for 51 weeks of the year.

  24. Re: I want to move my hives ~15' and flip their facing direction

You were not seeing something that wasn't there. They do fly to the old spot and then to the new one sometimes for a few days. For the reorientation 180 deg, you could have put a top cover with an...
  25. Re: Collecting trapped bees during the day???

I have heard you can leave the top off and bees coming back will stay at the hive. You can collect quite a few in an hour or so. Just what I heard. Never tried it.
