    Re: Empty Hives

Went uptoday to take a look. I have one hive with about 5 frames of capped brood and larva and many, many bees. I saw the queen.

Another hive (one of my originals) had several thousand bees on...

    Re: Empty Hives

I’m pretty sure they are the classic fire ants. I’ll no more when I get back home and stick my hand in them. Will keep you posted.

    Re: Empty Hives

My understanding of EFB or AFB is the frames have a rotting smell. I did take a good sniff of the frames and didn’t detect anything foul as far as Odor goes. Is there other indicators?

    Re: Empty Hives

I’m not sure it’s solved. I get back home Saturday and will take another look. If I have a mite infestation I feel I would have gotten a whole lot more mites than 1 or 2 even if I did the test...

    Re: Empty Hives

Either way I learned a lot. My hives are set on concrete blocks which sit on a pallet. I saw a couple of other threads on this forum about ant proof hives. I’ll probably make some stands that have...

    Re: Empty Hives

IT’S ANTS! The one thing I noticed is that all the hives had ants in them. I thought they came in after the bees left. I have since sprinkled DE around the base and under all the remains hives. Is...

    Re: Empty Hives

Just got back from the bees. 3 strong (lots of bees and lots of brood) original hives. One of my original hives had bees yesterday. Nothing today. Other original has lots of bees but no brood and I...

    Re: Empty Hives

The hive was completely empty. Not even dead bees. Other than comb you would have never known they were there.

Thanks to all that responded. I know there is an overwhelming amount of opinions and ideas but here’s my plan of action.

I leave on a 4 day trip tomorrow early, early. Can’t get Oxalic acid until...

    Re: Empty Hives

What about feeding granulated sugar to a struggling hive? Feeding it enclosed on top of the hive?

Next question. Do the bees fly off and die? There’s not a dead bee to be found.

    Dudley,

You are so correct. I will now treat my hives prophylacticly for mites from now on. I assumed everything was fine since my hives have been just fine until these 6 nucs I brought in....

    Re: Empty Hives

The one thing I did notice of the six nucs. Some of the queens were darker than what I’m used to seeing. All my other queens are basically red in color. Some of the queens in the nucs are dark almost...

    Re: Empty Hives

    Alex,

I started with 2 original packages in 2015. I split those in 2016. One was successful and the other not. I recombined one of them. This year I split two more hives successfully. Both hive...

    Panacea of weak hives

I read Mike Bush’s article on the Panacea to a weak hive. In there he said: “If you are afraid of transferring the queen from the queenright hive, because you are not good at finding queens, then...
