    Re: Battling beetles

We had a hive last fall that was full of beetles. We assumed ownership of this hive from a neighbor and it was still on his property. This was my first time with them, so I did crush as many as I...

    6/7/17

Swarm in our bee yard, too high up in a tree to reach. They didn't stay long, maybe a couple hours. Later, upon examining a hive, it had a SHB infestation, so I...

    Re: Kansas

Swarm high in a tree about 30' from our hives. Too high to retrieve. They stayed for 2 days then left.
  6. Re: Swarm boxed in deep with 2 med frames

I've done the same thing with 2 super frames because my super frames had honey in them and I wanted to entice the swarm to stay. they just build the comb down below the frame. I left mine until...

Re: no cook sugar brick is a joke

I have been pouring a 4# bag of sugar in a large bowl and mixing in ACV just until damp. Pour into the cookie sheets like Lauri uses, then lay waxed paper over the top and use the rolling pin to...
  9. Re: Goldenrod honey, harvest for sale or not?

My hives smell overwhelmingly of butterscotch right now. Just like hanging out and sniffing around. :)

    Re: Bad honey extraction experience

Every year our Beek newsletter has a reminder in it to unplug your garage door opener so you don't run it up and forget it. I think you're not alone in this experience. :)

Re: Have You Smelled It Yet?

I'm wondering now if it's GR I've been smelling these past couple falls. I noticed my hives smell a certain way in the fall, but then when I'm out in the pasture and around it smells the same. I...

    Re: Top Entrance ideas

We made 2 inch high "boxes" and cut a 1/2 inch hole in the front with the hole saw. We leave these on year round. It gives room for a sugar board in winter and provides good ventilation. We had...

adding brood to super small swarm

I caught a tiny swarm last weekend. I probably could have encircled it within my hands. I put them into a nuc and fed them syrup. They are drawing comb, but there are so few bees. They do have...

We just had a swarm 2 days ago also. I could have almost surrounded it with my two hands it was so small. I put them in a nuc with some sugar syrup. Mostly I hived them because I'm thinking I...

  17. Re: how to shrink a newspaper combine down to 2 again?

I thought about taking the frames with something on them and putting them into just the 2 brood boxes when we did the combine, but I was under the impression that they'd fight and that's why you do...
  18. how to shrink a newspaper combine down to 2 again?

We did a combine last weekend of two weak hives. The strongest one on the bottom (2 deep brood boxes). Then the sheet of newspaper, then the weakest one ( 2 deep brood boxes) then a super that has...
  19. Re: Q-less/laying worker and new queen/smoke ?

I was planning on doing exactly that, just wanted to understand they "why" of it.

So do they run her around because they are anticipating leaving the hive due to smoke?
  20. Q-less/laying worker and new queen/smoke ?

    1. Is there a typical amount of time in which a queenless hive will develop a laying worker issue? Is it a guaranteed development or will they just dwindle away?

    2. We've never put a queen...

Re: Is it normal to not react to a sting?

If you have comfrey plant, it's a great thing to put on stings. Take a leaf and cut it in pieces, salt it (to release the moisture from the leaves) and lay it on a sting. I wrap the area with a...
