    The were emerged in the QR hive that finished the cells. Week before and week after virgins emerged just fine in hair roller cages in both hives.

    I agreed with the "untested" bit, I pop my mini mated queens in to a 2f or the 1/2 shallows, when I can to limit the resource risk.
    The amount of drone laying queens people end up in packages here...

    Once in swarm mode, one is going to be hard pressed to keep the old queen around with capped cells/emerging virgins, and a larger queenless hive is very tempting to a virgin vs a smaller...

    I had a bit of a head scratcher this year. I built a rig to emerge in to small hole JZBZ cages, and 90% ended up dead in the cages on 2 trys in 2 different hives that emerged virgins in hair roller...

    I would push you toward the Russian foam design.. more or less the same as the comerical ones, witch realy had a lot of thought put into them

    the foam hives I linked may better(and still Russian...lol).. after last years experiment with wood topbar minys pointing the way , I had very good luck with ye-old mass produced (made in china)...
