    Re: Overwintering a NUC

My nucs overwinter in the same configuration I overwinter my full size hives, just in smaller portions. Does your full size hive need "another med" or be fine with a migratory cover, same with...

    Re: Bee hive spacing.

I draw no correlations between proximity of the hives and robbing. When they have the urge/stimulation, they'll rob across the yards as quick as they'll rob the neighbor. In my yards most of the...
  4. Re: wax foundation falling apart in the extractor

I'm assuming the extractor is tangential, i.e. frame sits in the basket with one side facing the tub of the extractor and the other toward the center axis? Are you going slow before switching sides;...

    Re: Keeping Bee Hive Records

I never got into the duct tape on the cover method. Instead I get a few scraps and cut offs from a local vinyl fence manufacturer and cut them into flat pieces. The pieces fit between the IC and...

    Re: Hello from SC

Welcome As rw said add your location, there are frequently tons of beekeepers out there but sometimes we hide in plain sight.

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

Rather than the hive itself, you might consider exploring a "one man" device to lift, weigh and transport a hive over moderately uneven terrain. Lift min of 250 lb, lift range of 0 to 54" and easily...

Re: Mouse Guard and Entrance Reducer for Winter

I get it from a local but it's like a 16 gauge mild steel with 1/4" holes. Even expanded metal will work; a pencil is a good go/no go gauge, if a pencil will fit through - so can a bee.

Re: Mouse Guard and Entrance Reducer for Winter

I use a fixed 4.5" entrance but same concept as an installed entrance reducer. Clipped the bottom of the metal to provide unobstructed entrance/exit on the BB. The screws in this pic allow the guard...

Re: Melting down burr comb with larvae

As noted above, the wax melts fine and there's a YouTube where a guy sautÚs some larvae for snacks if you don't want to waste them either.

    Re: Foundationless source?

I've considered and accomplish it, but the time involved in the set ups and quantity required made buying frames at a $1 and change more attractive. One of the attractions for F frame was the top...

    Re: Foundationless source?

I had no luck finding a repacement for the F frame either; in the interim I've started using the wedged top bars and turning the wedge to form a starter strip. It requires more steps for assembly...

Re: Basic Drone and Mating Question From a Noob

Not exactly correct on the "will only try to mate" part, drones will mate with anything that enters their DCA. The part where you mention the queen flies further from the hive to mate is true and...

    Re: Xentari Questions

Pretty much the same as Ravenseye but sometimes the drawn comb only comes in by a super or two; too few frames for a gal and I don't like BTa solutions sitting around very long. Seems to pick up an...

Re: How early can I pull the supers?

Freezing isn't necessary if you extract and put the "sticky" frames right back on the hives; leaving the frames sit around for a couple days is a recipe for slime.

    Re: Runny Honey

Just for clarification, USDA says Grade A Honey moisture content must be 18.6 or below, moisture content above 20% is Substandard.

    Re: TREAT or FEED

I must be missing something; why is it an either/or question? Why can't you treat while feeding or feed while treating?

    Re: Feeding a queen castle

When I do use jars to feed, another alternative is a feeding "shim" that allows multiple jars over any hole.

Re: How early can I pull the supers?

Without freezing the frames my concern would be shb eggs and larvae.

You mentioned you have "a hive that swarmed," any others that could protect the frames?
