  1. Re: what size filter do you use to strain your honey?

Which is why I wrote, google it.
A "grit guard" is a raised plastic grid that fits in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. It's designed for car washing... and works for filtering honey.

    If you...
  2. Re: what size filter do you use to strain your honey?

    I do.

I see no reason to suspend the bag, the "grit guard" is already suspending the bag above the bottom.

I use this method to drain cappings.
I place a bag filled with cappings on...
  3. Re: what size filter do you use to strain your honey?

Or, you could put a "grit guard wash bucket insert" (google it) in the bottom of your bucket and leave the gate open.

    Re: Cowen Uncapper troubleshooting

I have the same uncapper and have the same problem now and then.
I turn the motor pulley (under power) and it runs again.

    Uncapper drip tray

I want to make a drip tray to fit under the rails of my old Cowen uncapper.
The rails hold 35 dripping frames. The honey will flow towards the cappings catcher.

    Seemed simple enough until I...

    Bondo Fiberglass Repair Kit

I picked up a stainless steel, water jacketed honey sump at an auction for $25. Unfortunately someone ripped the baffles out tearing the inside wall (which explains the price). I figured I would...

    Re: Outside Storage for Supers

    I do.
I store them wet, stacked on skids with a sheet of cardboard on the top and bottom and cover them with a tarp.

I have to store them inside until it is too cold for the bees to rob, letting...

Re: Any idea what this is?

I have a similar one although yours has been modified.

It was a bottom, water jacketed, uncapping tank/wax melter.

Screw a heater in the large threaded hole on the bottom water jacket, fill...

Re: How long do most newbies stay with beekeeping?

Keeping bees without treating is like living to 100.
None of my relatives did, probably not yours.

    Re: heated uncapping tank

Undo the screws holding the red cover on the heater and turn the adjustable temperature setting up.

Poll: Re: Bees, lies and evidence-based policy

I put my bees on hay.
My main flow is clover honey, it starts around the last week of June and lasts til late July, early August.
Then a bit of a dearth til the goldenrod flow starts mid/late...

Poll: Re: Bees, lies and evidence-based policy

If the new beekeepers didn't register, they are not in the stats. I was only talking about the 1000 that did register.

zhiv9, you are in Barrie, I'm in Aurora, about 60 km south, not that far from...

Poll: Re: Bees, lies and evidence-based policy

I was reluctant to stick my neck out and add to this discussion.
I'm already a pariah in our club for questioning the OBA's views on neonics.

This spring, I wrote the OBA and asked how they came...

    Re: Cowen uncapper eats frames

When the frame drops off the chain onto the lugs, it hangs up on the channel guide on one side. Or one side is slower feeding than the other.
The frame either slips in properly or the bar either...

    Cowen uncapper eats frames

My chain fed, cast aluminum, Cowen Uncapper knocks an ear off the top bar on about 1 in 75 frames. These are well drawn combs that I would hate to scrap.

Does anyone use metal frame savers?
    Do...

    cowen uncapper knives

I have an old cast aluminum uncapper with blades heated by a small hot water heater with a recirculating pump.
Do you ever sharpen the serrated blades on your uncapper?
    If so, how?

I don't want to get any bigger.

How do you manage to NOT expand your colony numbers every year?
I just want to stick with the 50ish colonies that I am keeping now.
