Re: Moving beehives across the yard

Listen to Michael Bush. I had to move 2 hives a short distance and it worked well. Do not fail to do the "leave behind box" if you want it to work well and as fast as possible. J

    Re: Swarm imminent, other problem?

Your strong hive with honey stores that you are feeding is pulling out all stages of brood? This is not starvation. While I can only "internet guess" because I can't see it, it sure sounds like a...

Re: How do I relax w/bees?

All good advice. For me, the best is to 1. Have a purpose/goal in the inspection. It helps greatly if you keep a journal to know what you want to check on. 2. Use a quiet box to keep frames in and...

Re: Mite and beetle count areas?

Your mite and beetle counts can vary greatly from hive to hive in your own apiary, so it really would not provide any useful information for others. J

    Re: Cant' Reduce Moisture

Try the dehumidifier in your shower stall or bathtub. I added a small fan to blow over the buckets and it reduced it from 18.5 to 17% in 2-3 days. J
  7. Re: OAV - First dose different than subsequent doses?

That appears to be instructions from a distributer not Varrox. In any event, ignore it and treat with full dose. J

    Re: Formic pro hurting bees?

All sounds normal to me also. I have noticed a couple dozen dead bees in the first few days of treating dumped right outside the hive and wonder if they don't cart them away because of the treatment....

    Re: vinegar sugar recipe

I add a couple tablespoons pr/gal of 1:1 to deter spoilage, but have never found it necessary for 2:1 or thicker. I use organic apple cider vinegar, but I am sure white is just as effective. J

Re: Temperature to kill wax moths

They don't generally fly at night unless they see a light. But, not sure about the black lights used with bug zappers.
  12. Re: TF experiment swarm fail with 33% mite load. Will OAV 5 rounds in 21 days work?

Agreed on all points. You need to hammer them going into winter, and he has the cutest helper that seems like is angling to take over the whole operation in a few years. J

Re: How many boxes as I prepare for winter

Hi Mwippern. You will do well with 2 deeps and a medium for overwintering which is the common configuration for the Northeast. Michael Palmer looks for a weight of 140lbs. You can probably extract...

Re: Temperature to kill wax moths

HA Ha That's funny about shooting blanks to kill wax moths. The only way to kill them is a scattershot shell right in the middle of a frame.
I remember the MP video showing a live wax moth larvae...

    Re: In a Bind

I am in a similar situation, (although not as serious and as long) and came to the conclusion that leaving them on is the better option. You might want to consider closing upper entrances and...

    Re: Poorly mated queen?

Bummer. Around here its getting late to buy a mated queen, so think about combining if you have to. J
  21. Re: Goldenrod pollen vs. nectar/ treatment rambling

Probably mostly goldenrod. Bees bringing in pollen doesn't necessarily mean that the nectar from the same plant is flowing, but with goldenrod you can assume it is. Don't wait until October to...

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

You might be surprised to learn that most (not all!)beekeepers think the cost of woodenware is reasonable. I think all would agree that the boxes are easy to assemble with minimal woodworking...

    Re: Oxylic acid schedule

That's a good point you bring up Lincoln. The day before you OA, you should loosen your reducers. I have never nailed any in, but have had to struggle with them being swollen or propolized and...

    Re: Failed OAV treatments?

I think you are wise to get some formic on them asap. I second what others have suggested: Maybe bad OA, but the real reason it seems you are not making progress yet is 80% of the mites are under the...

    Re: Tangled Bees

From your title, I thought you were referring to "Festooning" bees, which is quite a site. From your pictures, I would say that RV is correct. They are just hanging out there. There is probably a...
