    Re: Ants emptied one box

For the next hive on that stand, might try a couple of dog/cat flea collars around the bottom of the pole a few inches apart, works on my small fruit trees when crawlybugs get bad.

    Re: First Frost Thread.

Cold front blew thru a day ago, woke up 27.9 this morning. It will likely be back in the 70-80's thru Christmas now:D

Re: Sugar water residue/growth in jars

See it also if not using bleach or apple cider vinegar. Wife feeds humming birds and it will get like that in the fridge if left to long as well.

    Re: suspicious looking frame

Little John, I only see it like that on darker comb, extract the honey and it looks almost the same as honey from a purdy white frame from my supers. Not sure, but I think it is more "optical" due...

    Re: suspicious looking frame

Looks like plain ole capped honey to me. Looks like that in my brood frames, lighter on super foundation.
  7. Re: not prepared / first cut-out, what can increase my chances?

I'm with Elmer on changing the comb orientation, I'd pull the frame and use wood glue and the rubber bands to set them correct, queen may not want to lay in cells like that. May do two on one frame,...

Re: Cover Crops and how close to hive???

I read a journal last summer on this, don't recall where tho, Micheal may know? Any way, they said bees don't forage en masse within so many yards of a hive, as they don't have a "dance" for such...
  9. Re: Ragweed: Is it or is it not a good resource for bees?

Have tons of the western ragweed up here, never seen a bee on it, but it wouldn't surprise me if they use it when needed. It is in the sunflower family and we have a a lot of that here as well. I...

    Re: Sugar $0.39 / lb at walmart.com

Just checked stores within 40 miles (a bunch) and they are all $8.88 per 25 lb bag here, pickup only.

Close them up in the evening and mow at night.

    Re: Partridge Pea

GWW, dont take it as you cant read! I read it twice! lol

I think the true culprit is in the writing of the paragraph. IMO, they should have put the clarification, "The flowers don’t produce any...

    Re: Partridge Pea

GWW, I didn't read, or understand it that way, as it says "The flowers don’t produce any nectar. Yet, we repeat, partridge pea is a major source of honey."

I believe what you referenced falls...

Re: Dadant Screened IPM Bottom Booard

I think you will like them over the other style once you try them on. If you where closer, I'd swap my others with you:D Thats how much I like the gap'ed ones

Re: Dadant Screened IPM Bottom Booard

I have bb similar to what you describe but from a different vendor, honestly, I prefer them much more than the others with a gap I have. I get a little build up and on occasion a few moth webs, but...

    Re: Harvesting Uncapped Frames?

I pulled a couple half frames as you describe, some capped, some not. Those tested at 18.5% so it took little to get the % down to 17. I did do the "shake test" and the uncapped nectar didn't run,...

    Re: Partridge Pea

I planted about 5lbs last Spring to augment what we have here naturally, only time I have seen bees on them is early spring just as flowers bud, but honestly, not as much use as I expected. Bees go...

    Re: Capturing Wild Bees Question

I'll add my cheap 2 cents.

I think you would be totally bummed when you got home and found all that comb and bees trapped in honey goo in that bucket.
The point of empty frames to me is having...
  21. Re: Help Needed!! I have Queen Cells in My Super

You will need better opinions from local and/or beeks in your temperate zone, but I think you would be playing "against the house" this late for splits unless, you have a strong enough amount of bees...
  22. Re: Bees killing themselves on Air Conditioner Unit

Probably trying to get water from the condenser, might try giving them a water source in the other direction, or screen it off as you mentioned.
  23. Re: Why would a queen less hive swarm with newly hatched queen

May have become honey bound while taking the time to raise a queen. Might check to make sure that isn't the case but be extra gentle with frames containing the queen cells.

    If you're looking to...
