  1. Re: returning wet supers after extracting; how to avoid robbing frenzy?

Interesting, different folks with differing experiences.

Our experience, even with dry supers, outside storage was a total failure. First year we moved onto this property we had no place to store...
  2. Re: returning wet supers after extracting; how to avoid robbing frenzy?

I disagree. If the bees were smarter than you, they wouldn't have moved to Alberta, it's to cold for people, never mind honeybees over there on the wrong side of the rockies.... :)
  3. Re: returning wet supers after extracting; how to avoid robbing frenzy?

If the boxes are left unprotected, then the bees will first get the honey, then the wax moth will arrive. We have a small warm room where the supers go before extraction, it's bee proof. We stack...
  4. Re: returning wet supers after extracting; how to avoid robbing frenzy?

I used to worry about getting supers 'cleaned' before winter, but no more. We stack em up in storage as wet frames, then they go on the following season over the excluder still smelling like wet...

    Re: Ubuntu

If it's for an arduino, just install the arduino ide and call it good. sudo apt-get install arduino will get a useable not to old version, or go install it manually from arduino website to get the...

    Re: Ubuntu

It's been a few years since I worked with anything from Microchip, but when I did, MPLab was available for and ran fine on linux. For Atmel, compilers and programmers are available, avr-gcc to...

    Re: Preparing honey bottles

Maybe different in your part of the world, but in ours, canning jars need to be sterilized before use, it's assumed they will get that during the canning process so they done come that way. Honey...

    Re: Oxalic acid (OA) vaporizer

I have one of those from Joerg. works as expected, no complaints.
  9. Re: Quality Queen Cells with Small Nuc as Cell Starter?

For a number of years I felt we were selecting for 'reduced swarming'. Any colony where we found cells would be re-queened from the stock that was not producing swarm cells. If it was to early for...

Re: OAV Dosage - Legal Dose Not Enough

If you heat OA up to the breakdown temperature it will break down, wether you say so or not, it will.

Re: OAV Dosage - Legal Dose Not Enough

I've listened to talks by Medhat Nasr on mite control, he would know some of the details on OAV efficacy, he's the one that did the lab and field work for the approvals in North America. If memory...

Except ofc the data set used to get approvals for Oxalic Acid in the USA, that came from Canada, not Europe...

    Re: Aggression after mite treatment

Give it a try, come back in 3 years and let us know how it went.
  14. Re: OMG !!!! Queens , Queens and more Queens !!!

The important clue is in the brood, do you see eggs, and if so, are they in a nice tight pattern ? With two or three queens emerging like that, if the intent was to swarm I would think the swarm...

Re: New Queen & Laying Workers?

The queen is not viable. Wether it's a drone laying queen or laying workers is of no consequence at this point. It's been 3 weeks, there is no capped worker brood and you are seeing occasional...

I think I have posted this photo before, but if not, here it is again.

  17. Re: If I add an upper entrance above my QE will the bees fill the honey supers faster

Well actually, we do laugh when folks talk about 'winter' in any of the southern states.

  21. Re: If I add an upper entrance above my QE will the bees fill the honey supers faster

If you let the hive swarm, then the issue of upper / lower entrance is pretty much just an academic discussion. The swarm will have 100 times more effect on the honey crop than the details of hive...

Re: Disturbing hive with newly emerged queen

Every queen rearing calendar I've looked at has one opening the colony a couple days after you expect her to emerge to check for emerged cells and discard those not emerged. I place cells most weeks...
  23. Re: If I add an upper entrance above my QE will the bees fill the honey supers faster

They will fill the supers faster if they have a better flow.

You have to sit back and remember how the process inside a hive actually works. Forager returns to the hive and hands it's load off to...
  24. Re: Can Laying workers be active in a hive with a virgin Queen?

My guess based on the timing, first queen was poorly mated, they realized that right away and superceeded as soon as she had viable eggs with which to do so.
  25. Re: Interested in new design for entrance reducer

Was working in the yard today after making up new Nucs and I realized something that reminded me of this conversation. Turns out my fancy 1x reducers work just as well on a 5 frame box as they do on...
