Re: Is my idea brilliant or stupid?

I bought this one from Dadant this last Summer and went through around 100 supers with it.

I'm currently refurbishing an old steam heated uncapping setup but didn't get it done in time for the...

Re: Feb 1st? All is well?

Only lost a couple so far, still have half my apiary to check but things are looking good. What makes me worry is when we get mild weather followed by a nasty cold snap. Lost a lot of bees last year...

Re: Small Scale farming- looking for input

Turn it into a market garden. I grow 3 acres of produce to bring to farmers markets alongside my honey and it's very profitable if done right. We make most of our money off of bush beans, sweet corn,...

Re: Almost lost em to the Colorado River

Same here, I have to move a yard with 26 colonies in it before next Spring because it's on CRP land that's going to have a required burn next year. Reeeally not looking forward to doing that by...

Re: Slow Start to the Honey Flow

It's just getting warm enough for the bees to take syrup here, the grass is just starting to get a green tint to it lol. Definitely a late spring

Re: Grafted for the first time today. [PIC]

I hear ya, this Winter/Spring has been pretty nuts. I had planned on throwing paddies and syrup in my hives a few weeks ago but mother nature decided otherwise
  10. Re: ABJ article, page 1148 , "It is the Mites because"

I lost about 30% of my hives this Winter too Johno; had a week where there were several days in a row with a high of around -6F. Surrounded by food but starved :/
    I suppose that's the risk I run...
  11. Re: ABJ article, page 1148 , "It is the Mites because"

Same over here in Northwest Iowa. I have my apiaries registered on fieldwatch through beecheck.org, so anyone applying any herbicides/pesticides give me a call to work with me.

    Re: New To Selling Honey

I go to farmers markets around my area. Honey will generally sell itself if you can find a market that has been around for a couple years and has a consistent crowd. As long as you show up each...

    Re: New To Selling Honey

Same thing here, I sell both plastics and mason jars and the jars have been the #1 seller. On a side note, Ball jars has a sale usually towards August where all their jars are 50% off if you purchase...

Re: pulling honey ideas looking for feed back

What type of escapes do you use? I tried using the ones sold by Dadant that fit into the inner cover, but didn't have too much success with them.

    Re: "stingproof" suits?

Thought I'd reply with a little update; I ended up getting the ProVent suit and so far so good. Still pretty early to tell but I have done a couple change outs with some aggressive bees and managed...

    Re: "stingproof" suits?

I currently have 65 hives myself, so it's good to hear that these suits hold their own in bigger beeyards. Last time I got stung was in the leg while unloading a load of very peeved bees. My left arm...

    Re: "stingproof" suits?

I ended up ordering the Provent suit from Mann Lake for both cost and from what reviews I've seen about it. I called an allergist office and they told me there was a bee venom shortage and would...

    Re: "stingproof" suits?

I think I'm going to go ahead and order the Provent suit from Mann Lake. Might slap a piece of duct tape over the black logo on the chest pocket though haha

Could they sting through the front of the veil or around the sides and top on the Ultra Breeze?

    "stingproof" suits?

I recently had an allergic reaction to a bee sting, but have invested myself into beekeeping and love it too much to just walk away from it. I used to use one from Dadant but I seem to get stung a...

    Re: Web Design

You can add custom CSS to WordPress themes under Appearance > Editor menu. I'd suggest creating a child theme and then adding in your own custom CSS page to it. Here's a link to child themes in the...

Re: Trying to figure out this wax melter

I'm still not sure where water goes in, at first I thought that box was to store the heated knife like D Coates said but after a closer look there's a hole in the bottom of that box and a pipe...
