    Re: New swarm bearding

Sounds good. I'll swap it out for a solid bottom board.

Re: Trapping 2019 - success rate?

I did combine them into a single deep with 1 drawn comb and 9 new frames w/foundation. They are now bearding and about half are inside the hive with the eggs the queen is laying. Weird.

Re: Trapping 2019 - success rate?

2nd swarm caught on July 12th. This was in the same spot that I caught one last month. It was a big one that went into both nuc boxes.

    Re: New swarm bearding

They are on a screened bottom board so I don't thing they are hot.
I'm pretty sure there isn't any chemical smell in it.
Maybe I'll just but another box on and see if that helps.

  8. Re: process for selling honey locally (sall-scale) ....?

For me it's easier to just sell out of my house through word of mouth, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. No need to jump through all the hoops to be able to sell it in stores. Plus you can charge...

Re: 1ST Swarm caught in trap

Your right. I also kept hearing about how the trap must be a hollow cavity too. This nuc had 5 fully drawn frames in it also. The bees know better than us!

Re: Can I use Bee-Quick on myself?

Sounds to me as if the original poster's hive has been taken over by AHB.

    1ST Swarm caught in trap

    Re: attach trap to tree

Charlie B. & odfrank - do you have frames in your bait hives? If so are they old, new with foundation or foundationless?

    Re: Major losses in Michigan

I would say my average loss is 30%.

I did notice one was dead in Nov. but didn't inspect it to see what happened.
I also didn't dig into the hives yesterday to see what was going on before they...

Yes, that was my only mite control. Worked pretty good for 8 years! Not sure why it didn't this year.

    Major losses in Michigan

Temps were around 60 yesterday. Checked my hives and found I only had 1 out of 12 that was still alive. All 12 fall nucs I made were toast too.
Hopefully I won't run out of honey for the next year...
  20. Sticky: Re: treating vs. not treating for mites: opinion thread

Sounds about right. Although for point f. I just do nucs/splits either with eggs or swarm cells.
  21. Sticky: Re: treating vs. not treating for mites: opinion thread

Out of all the hives I have there are maybe 5 or 6 that produce like gangbusters. The rest will maybe produce a medium super of honey. I'm ok with only getting 1000 lbs of honey a year at this point...
  22. Sticky: Re: treating vs. not treating for mites: opinion thread

I've been keeping bees now since 2005 and have never treated. For the first few years I was on the package bee route. I'd buy the bees, they'd last through the 1st winter but almost always died the...
