  1. Re: Mixing a few (5-12) gallons of syrup

My mixing method works with any container. A quart, a bucket, a tanker truck. Make a mark on a quart jar, fill to line with sugar, fill to line with hot water. Shake. Top up with hot water. Same 65%.

  3. Re: Mixing a few (5-12) gallons of syrup

Not sure. I have drums of waste sugar, so I just fill buckets. A 5 gallon bucket heaped up with granulated sugar until you can’t add anymore, that’s about 42 lbs.
  4. Re: Mixing a few (5-12) gallons of syrup

To make 2:1 without weighing or measuring...

Make a mark inside the bucket, about 4" from top. Fill with sugar to line. Fill with HOT water to line. Stir until well mixed. Top up to line with HOT...

    Re: Requeening Without Attendants

This year, with attendants in, I had 5 queens rejected out of 350 nucs made.

Re: Anyone Else Get A Whiff Yet?

Smelled a bit on August 8, in Fairfax. Now...nothing. Bloom not strong yet. Seeing a bit of orange goldenrod pollen, but not flow yet.

Re: new apiary law proposal for NY

I've dealt with the NY inspectors since the early 80s. I've had nothing but good relationships with the NY inspectors. There are bad actors in every industry, including the honey bee inspection...

    Re: 2 New Bee Questions...

I don't want to see a dearth before winter shutdown. For instance...I want a strong Autumn flow so the bees can build a strong cluster of young bees before shutdown. That's what they need for...

    Re: Maxant Wax Melter

Too bad they no longer make the cappings separator. Water jacket with hood/infrared tubes above. Clean unburned honey comes out one pipe. Clean wax comes out another. They made a 4' and a 6' model....

    Re: Is Beltsville Closing Again?

We've been trying to get the Vermont Bee Lab off the ground for several years. Don't think it has anything to do with Beltsville closing or moving.

Re: Double nuc, a nod to Mike Palmer

Funny thing...I never saw the previous posts. Thanks for the kind words. Truly, nucs are the foundation of my sustainable apiary. Last graft was July 10. 56 cell builders harvested...well, 55. One...

Re: Too late to split in CT?

Not too late to requeen. Now and into the autumn flow is a good time. We’re just finishing our requeening here. Mostly use push in cages. Pulling the last cages this coming week.

Re: Too late to split in CT?

In my opinion, it's too late. Too late even if you add a mated queen.

    Re: caging queens

Tough year here for raising queens. Too cold, too wet, then too hot. The July 3rd catch...had to set up a canopy for shade so I could keep the caged queens as cool as possible. And, to keep myself...

Re: What do i call my queens?

Only 50% if you got them from OHB. Robertson from Saskatchewan provides breeders for OHB. OHB open mates the daughters in California.

Re: a scientific look at 'mite bombs'

Some of us have known what was happening. For years, NY State sampled all my NY apiaries in July. All rolled 0-2 mites per 300 bees. Very acceptable numbers for July. Then there were my two apiaries...

Re: When does grafting season end?

I would finish up while there is still a flow. Here the Linden flow ends about mid-July, and then there's goldenrod. That's too late in the season for raising queens. My last graft is July 10.
