Sticky: Re: Can't stop the EFB.

I was using the Pro DFM from Mann Lake since they had a killer deal on it in store, when I was in the area.

However, after reading the listed strains it's really no different than the ones I buy...

Perfect, thank you! I'll give them two weeks and hope for very little drift back. If there is any, I'll place a smaller nuc up there.

And good point on the ladies 🤣

Sticky: Re: Can't stop the EFB.

    Definitely good info.

Also confirms my suspicion that EOs were playing a part in it. As said before, likely from weakening the bees natural gut flora allowing EFB to take over.

    I have not used...
  4. Re: How long to keep hive out of area before returning to yard?

I'm a little skeptical of 4 weeks. I've moved them for 2 weeks before moving them back without an issue. I've always believed that once the foragers oriented to a new location, and given about 3 days...
  5. How long to keep hive out of area before returning to yard?

I built a new stand in a different location for my bees that will be much sunnier and more protected from wind.

Since itís only 100 meters from my current location I was planning on moving them...

Re: Dividing a 3# package between two nucs

I divided out my 3lb packages this year, buying 4 packages and 4 queens, giving me 8 new hives. I divided them out using a 2 cup scoop into 5 frame nucs. They have been in their new homes for 2 weeks...

    Well, good news!

I popped the top on the last hive again and could not find the queen anywhere but there were tons of eggs, yet still several queen cells.

I figured I'd knock the cells down...

Re: How many frames of brood for 3 lb package

Still no dead queen kicked out of the hive. There are a few workers, a couple drones, but nothing of concern and definitely no dead marked queen.

I'm still hoping they were just protecting her....

Re: How many frames of brood for 3 lb package

I just peeked through the hives. The queens are out and I had eggs in all of them. A couple had already torn down all queens cells and the others still had 2-3 which I knocked down. I'm guessing they...

My original gut told me to used capped brood but the forum here convinced me to use open brood to increase queen acceptance.

The queens are all released. There are very little dead bees outside...

I don't have enough resources to do another split. I took down a weaker hive to add to the packages, don't want to take any from my honey hives which are in full production.

Re: How many frames of brood for 3 lb package

I installed 4, 3lb packages of bees on Saturday with 2 frames of brood each.

I went in today to take out the queen cages noticing one had fallen down. I lifted up the frame and there were queen...

    Haha, funny stuff.

No swimming pools near me. We have this thing called the ocean, people tipically swim in and ride silly foam boards on it. Also deep in the redwoods pools would sure get filled...

Re: How many frames of brood for 3 lb package

    Sounds good.

I also failed to mention that I have enough clean drawn frames to cover 90% of what I'll need. The rest will have foundation or a starter strip. I also run 8 frame side by side facing...
  15. Re: 2019 package bee prices very high with major suppliers, why?

I could see that. OHB required all payments up front and has people on hand for demonstrations and what not. They are actually incredibly organized and perhaps that's part of the reason for the extra...

I think your buddy in UT is sold out and has been for several weeks, unless its not who I think. The other suppliers I know of here are selling 3 lb packages for $150 and one is $199 which is...

Thanks all. Sounds like my instincts are pretty dead on.

I may end up dividing out a weaker colony, with bees. While all my other hives are already filling out their second brood box, and almost...

I'm thinking they could cover 4 frames of brood, three to be safe so I don't get chilled brood around the edges? Or is that still ambitious?

How many frames of brood for 3 lb package

My local supplier was out of the queens I wanted, as sold individually, but had some available as packages. I suckered out and ordered a few packages to get the queens but have a new strategy in...

Wouldn't this keep the syrup from fermenting with pollen, into bee bread, as it's suppose to?

Keeping Mold out of Sugar Syrup

I have tried everything and am getting a little annoyed with how fast my syrup goes bad on the hives. When I lived in Utah it seemed the dry climate kept things longer. Only being a few miles from...

That's because they're made exclusively by OHB in NorCal. Long way for a package to go. Give them a few weeks after package season and queens will be available again.
