    Re: nectar detector

I've used one for a couple of seasons and find it works well for me.

  2. Re: Foam roller or Foam Brush for Adding Wax

Vance, does that work for you? I used to do that on top bars when I ran TBH's and it worked great, but does it work on foundation?

We've done a lot of waxing plastic foundation, and we do it by...

Re: Touching side bar - ALL way

The bees are only one aspect of potential trouble. The other is wood itself. Boxes move; frames move. Any variation and they'll be stuck. I don't see the benefit.

  5. Re: 2019 Lusby conference cancelled, no signups.

From my own perspective, I feel the Treatment-Free movement is sagging under the weight of dead bees. I did it myself for 6 years, so I understand the interest. But I think the more one learns about...

    Re: Happy Birthday Michael Palmer!

    Yes, Happy Birthday Mike!

And I know just the gift for Mike- a donation to his GoFundMe effort to send new beekeeping gear to the kids in Mexico....

Re: Winter Bee Bomb Nuc Weight

Mike's term 'bee bomb' is referring to adding a bunch of brood (harvested from 'brood factories' - which are colonies of stacked nuc boxes, managed throughout the summer in those boxes to provide...
  8. Re: Veil replacement material/netting

For the sake of historic interest, I guess that material was called crape (or crepe), and due to chemicals used to dye it, it was known to kill a few people.

“Many a woman has been laid in her...

Re: French Hill Apiaries Dot Com

Haha. Only 'younger' compared to some. That's why I like hanging out with Mike. As far as work goes, Mike's still hard to keep up with.

Re: French Hill Apiaries Dot Com

Mike and I spoke about this today, and I just added a Video page with some of the most popular videos linked in from Youtube.

    Re: Caucasian and buckfast queens

There isn't any history on New River's site. How long have they been in operation? There's a blog post about taking a Beekeeping 101 class in March of 2018... A certification in I.I. in March of...

    Beautiful.

Just exactly what I'd like to be building for myself right now.
    Well done!

    Re: upper ventilation for winter?

Here in Vermont, I use small upper entrances with open (but mouse-guarded) bottom entrances works well in our winters. I used to live in Canada (in Nova Scotia) and did one winter without an upper...
  15. Re: Anyone purchased the Newly redesigned Dadant 20 frame extractor?

I have two of the last design and I don't like the look of the changes.

One of the reasons I really love the Dadant 20 is that I can easily move it around by myself. I like the fact that I can...
  16. Re: Combining The Flow Hive with the Az Hive

You've built a great experiment there. I've often wondered how flow frames could be used in other ways. Why are the wooden deep frames upside down?

Re: honey filter for extracting room?

Well said, well said. I appreciate your honesty.

I was talking with another beekeeper who said he used to use the nylon stockings for a filter, but had it inside a metal mesh container which...

Re: honey filter for extracting room?

I love the cost-effectiveness of these ideas, but would this stuff pass an inspection? Stockings and drainage sleeves might not make the food grade under scrutiny?

    Re: FLIR image

It looks like the right side colony could be in the top, and the insulation is hiding it.
  20. Re: WHERE are the real treatment free beekeepers?

Well Jim, If there's no trace of treatment, I guess that makes your honey 'treatment free' too!
  21. Re: WHERE are the real treatment free beekeepers?

I love this. Solomon Parker standing there, gloves full of stingers, talking to the camera, but you can't hear him over the angry bees and Dee's desperate cries in the background. Looks like footage...
  22. Re: Ramsey: Forced Brood Breaks Could Be Harmful to Bees

I'm with you on the brood breaks, Johno. It seems to me that Ramsey's work shows us how much we can take for granted with little or no evidence to support our assumptions. How long have we taken for...
  23. Re: I am thinking about switching to all deeps

I started out using all deeps and intended to stick with them. As I grew toward working bees for a living, I took a job with a commercial beekeeper in my area to learn more, faster. That first honey...

    Re: Dadant clariflier M00550

I have one and love it. I suppose I could see wanting another or a bigger one if you had enough hives, but I find the 36" model to be great for my needs at this point.
