    Re: Foundationless source?

I miss the Kelly F frames, I even offered to buy 1000 from ML since I knew they do own the machines that made the F frames, they did not even see fit to answer my e-mail, which I thought very rude,...

    Re: bee-proof gloves?

I have found that bees can sting through the best of leather gloves, when they get damp from your sweat. My solution was to first put on a pair of nitrile gloves ( cheap ones from the dollar store) ...

Re: Disadvantages to using wire in frames

I use the cheap 50# fishing line from Walmart. I run 70 to 100 colonies, all foundationless, works good. I tie it off on a small nail, just make three turns around the nail, hold the line with one...

Re: OA Treatment with Brood - 3x5 or 3x7

About the same here Robbin, at most once during the dearth and once around Thanksgiving, some years just the one time at Thanksgiving, my bees have no brood then, they are survivor bees that I've...

Re: How do you indicate your hives status?

Lowe's has the 3m extreme in three colors, green ,yellow and orange.
  6. Re: Why would I be told that an inhouse queen is a bad idea?

Look in your hive, if you see plenty of drones then your bees can produce a better queen than the commercial "queen mills" if little or no drones, your only option is to purchase one.
  7. Re: Running out of equipment! How do you manage so many hives once you stop killing t

Started small, grew fast, made a lot of mistakes, overcame them and now at 77 years of age run up to 100 colonies with no help. I will share several things I have learned. Buy budget boxes from Mann...

    Re: new packages delayed

In my opinion, your club got screwed around, I've been selling bees since March tenth, though I'm much farther south in Georgia. Maybe they are having financial troubles, hope you guys can get your...

    Re: Nectar flow is ON!

I'm south of Savannah near the coast and I have the same thing going on here, most of the flows started a month early, some sooner. We're in the middle of low-bush Galberry and the palmetto ( our...

Re: Preventing a large hive from swarming.

You say you added empty drawn comb. I have found the bees do not see drawn comb as empty space, they do see empty foundationless as empty space and adding two or three of those in the center of the...

    Re: Trying top bar

I started with KTBH and never regretted it. Using them taught me a lot, and I built my own equipment. After I reached twenty five hives I switched to deep langs, I run all ten frame foundationless. I...

    Re: oxalic acid vaporizer guns

I now have gone to using hot water instead of grain alcohol, it's more trouble, but I deliver three and four grams per colony and it goes out of solution within seconds. I open the top and make a...

    Re: Aggressive bees

I agree with Dan, they sound like a normal large colony. A colony will usually get more aggressive the stronger it gets, dress for the occasion and always smoke, even when just peaking under the...

Re: Feeding but not drawing comb

My bees will store 2 parts sugar to 1 part water, they will build comb on 1 to 1 or even 1 part sugar to 2 parts water. I use foundationless deeps and place empty combs between brood combs. I feed...

    Re: oxalic acid vaporizer guns

Johno, after reading the thread about foggers, I am concerned about the effectiveness of a fogger. I hope the 173 degree boiling point of the grain alcohol is keeping the OA from converting to...

    Re: oxalic acid vaporizer guns

No, I don't take mite counts. The vapor fills the entire hive boxes just as thoroughly as using a wand, so I don't see where it wouldn't be as effective.

They will sometimes discard the sugar as trash. I feed mine sugar syrup when the dearth begins until Golden Rod comes in, for me that's three months long. I feed a very weak solution, a twenty five...

Re: Yet another post about my bees

Sounds like you've lost the colony, 100 bees won't be enough to recover in time to make winter bees. But you need to identify the problem so you can have success with the next colony. Something seems...
