My 2 frame mini nucs are ready to move up to a 5 frame nuc. The 2 frame is a 5 frame with a divider board. Not sure how to get the first side of bees on the walls and floor out. Any ideas are...

Re: Advice needed on my hive move error

Well I'd just move them all back. Close them up at dark, move then use branches and maybe a piece of plywood up against the front at an angle to make them have to go through the branches and around...

    Re: Virus's and comb?

Thank you, I suppose if you find deformed wing virus and do diligent mite treatments the comb should be destroyed too. I appreciate you sharing your research. This obviously could be quite...

    Virus's and comb?

Just wondering if any of the different virus's attributed to mites can infect the comb or are these virus's short lived without a host?
  6. Re: Newbie with hive that fell from rotten tree... advice needed!

It will save you a ton of work later if you can get the comb attached to your top bars and as straight as possible. There are a few ways to attach it. Strips of gause, rescue bars, etc. The top bar...

    Re: Losses in Central CA?

Mariposa here. Lost 3 nuc's early winter but believe it was due to 450 hives from Idaho that were put 1/2 a mile from me in October to overwinter before almond bloom. My losses were from robbing....
  8. Re: Wife and daughters getting stung... Long hair the trigger?

I have long hair and always tie my hair back or braid it when outside. The bees seem to be very interested in hair (maybe predator related). They get tangled then they get mad. Then I run ,swatting...
  9. Re: Early September and bees not interested in cleaning up honey?

I'm south of you. My bees are busy on tarweed and rabbit brush probably star thistle too. I believe your area also has sulphur buckwheat. I took all the feeders off my late swarm catches because they...
  10. Re: How do I install a Langstroh box nuc into my bar top hive?

These recue bars may help. I made 2 and they work well. Make sure they are centered and tip the point up a bit. http://www.thegardenacademy.com/micro-homesteading/rescue-frames-fast-comb-repair/

Re: Bees not attaching comb to bottom frame

Thanks everyone! I have no problem using wire or fishing line or wood skewers. My hive stand is level and all the frames are drawn very nicely within the frame edges. I will start adding new wired...

Re: Bees not attaching comb to bottom frame

Yeah, the attached comb did look like it was drone comb at the bottom except the first 3 or 4 they were nicely drawn. Thank you.

Bees not attaching comb to bottom frame

I got in my long lang today to steal 2 frames of brood for a friend in need. The hive was in better shape than expected. Lot's of capped honey, brood, and saw the queen. The problems started when I...

    Re: Venting top bar hive?

I live where our summers are dry with little humidity and have days over 110f occasionally. My top bar hives have screened bottoms that can be closed. With that kind of heat I keep the bottoms...

Re: Our bee garden...am I doing this right?

In my area I am concerned about what is blooming by the season. I think your list is good. Search Google with this for more ideas. "year round bee garden by season". Flowering trees are also a big...

Re: What Diameter Holes In Feeder Lids?

Thumb tacks work well like Harley Craig say's. Those plastic lids don't always seal as well as the metal ones. I suggest testing them first. A little beeswax rubbed on the rings of the metal lids...

Re: High humidity and too much unripe honey

Because of the heat we have here I keep a ventilation bar as my last bar before the follower board. It is a flat bar the same width as my top bars with 6 or 8 -1/2 in holes drilled through and screen...
  20. Re: Pole barn shed for my TBH's - good or bad idea?

We built a shade house this spring. So glad we did as we had a few 115 degree days. The back rolls down in the summer to shade the west side. It has been a bee saver. Quite a bit cooler in the shade....
  21. Re: Up to 1500 lbs of honey per acre if I plant these? Sounds unreal!

I live in the foothills south of you. I too have been looking at plants that support my bees during late summer, fall and winter. I looked up both of the plants you mentioned and was curious about...

Re: To shade or not to shade?

We made a shade and slowly moved all our hives under it. It faces south east and gets sun until about 11 am right now. We've had quite a few days above 105 this year. It is quite a bit cooler under...
  24. Re: Using camera in beeyard - how to keep camera from being sticky!

I read a post where the woman used a stylus with her gloves on. Haven't tried it yet.
  25. Re: June 2nd update

Great job. I really like your rescue frames. As far as the syrup color goes, I believe it is a normal color. I only use hot tap (well) water with pure cane sugar and mine turns a very pale tint of...
