  1. Re: USDA Honeybee Count Suspended. Was it Useful?

The responses to this have been great. It's good to hear from actual beeks, especially those who do this for a living.
  2. Re: USDA Honeybee Count Suspended. Was it Useful?

Thank you for all of these responses. Good information to be sure.
  3. Re: USDA Honeybee Count Suspended. Was it Useful?

I didn't know that CCD numbers were used to corroborate what commercial beekeepers were reporting. That would be a problem to be sure. I also didn't know that these numbers had been compiled since...
  4. Re: USDA Honeybee Count Suspended. Was it Useful?

Thanks, Mike. I browsed through some of the comments before I posted...most were quite old, but the posters seemed to think it was a hassle, and poorly administered. I haven't seen any comments on...
  5. USDA Honeybee Count Suspended. Was it Useful?

I am reading about the USDA suspending the collecting data on colony losses. I'm generally not too keen on government programs like this, as my experience is that they are inefficient and don't...

    Florida State Fair

I've been in Florida for only about four years, and I think I'm ready to start entering some honey shows. I can't seem to find anything on the Florida State Fair website about honey, so I am...

Re: Did my bees take out the queen?

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye out. I don't have a spare queen (only three hives),so I guess I'll just have to wait for brood to appear. The pattern was shotgun, so she may have been...

Re: Did my bees take out the queen?

I felt lucky to have seen it, as I had not taken into account the fact that a new queen won't encounter enough drones to mate properly. I'm in Florida, so the weather has been okay, but I don't see...

Did my bees take out the queen?

I believe I witnessed one of my hives replacing a queen on Saturday. There were about six bees clustered around her. She was barely moving...I believe close to death. They dragged her out and...

Re: Bright Yellow Honey and Comb

Do you mean pollen instead of nectar?

No, nectar. If it were pollen I wouldn't be wondering at all. But this is unripe honey, as yellow as can be.

    Bright Yellow Honey and Comb

For the past two weeks, my bees have been bringing in nectar that is bright yellow...nothing amber about it. Think the color of a daisy or a yellow highlighter. Then, this past weekend, I opened a...
  13. Re: Is there a way to graft an emergency cell from one hive onto a queenless hive?

Yes...plastic foundation. The emergency cell looks pretty far along. Could I clear the bees off that frame and trade a frame of empty foundation in the queenless hive? Just put one frame with a...
  14. Is there a way to graft an emergency cell from one hive onto a queenless hive?

I have two hives which I just installed from nucs the weekend before last. I looked yesterday and found an emergency cell in one. In the other, I'm terribly afraid that I may have rolled the queen...
  15. Uncapped Honey in Brood Chamber...Did I break up the brood?

One week ago, I hived a nuc, and opened it today to see how they were doing. I was a little concerned. The original five frames seemed to have more nectar than brood, and the three outermost frames...
  16. Re: What is the best time of day to hive a nuc?

    Thanks...good advice.
  17. Re: What is the best time of day to hive a nuc?

    Thanks, Crazy! :)
  18. Re: What is the best time of day to hive a nuc?

Good idea. I'll check before I drive off with them. Thanks.
  19. Re: What is the best time of day to hive a nuc?

Thanks, Clayton. Sounds like good advice. I've read that you should let them spend time on the bottom board before you move them into the hive, but I'm not sure what the rationale for that would be.
  20. What is the best time of day to hive a nuc?

It's been a few years since I installed a nuc, and I need some advice. I'll arrive home with my nucs around noon. Can I let them calm down for an hour or so then install them, or wait towards dusk?...

    Re: Umbrella Tree Information

I doubt it is a nectar source as well...but I'd love it if it were a pollen source. It'll flower later in the summer...I guess time will.
  22. Re: Single deeps in Florida (Tamp/St. Pete). Yes or no?

Thank you all very much for the responses. I really appreciate the input.

    Umbrella Tree Information

In Florida, we have Umbrella Trees, which are invasive, originally from Australia. I can't really find anything definitive on the internet about them as a pollen or nectar source. Any ideas?
  24. Re: Single deeps in Florida (Tamp/St. Pete). Yes or no?

I'm told down here that keeping on top of the queens is important, just to make sure the hives don't get to aggressive. Sounds like I'll have to stay on top of it.
  25. Re: Single deeps in Florida (Tamp/St. Pete). Yes or no?

B52EW, thanks. With less space, do you have more issues with swarming?
