Re: Bees absconding top bar hive

Sounds like it has the hallmarks of a couple of issues.
1 - hive decline from Varroa. As the Varroa Population peaks in the fall.
2- The hive may have been queenless for some time as it can take a...

Re: Honey production terrible in Top bar hives?

I saw the stored supers, with frames full of honey, waiting for extraction. His bees are "survivor" bees and he doesnt feed or treat. He leaves them with all honey they collect from July onwards. ...

Honey production terrible in Top bar hives?

I have had top bar hives for 3 years. This year is a real boom year for the bees in my area. (Best season in 7 years, I have been told).
A friend of mine with 3 langs has taken over 200 pounds of...

Re: Stamets fights varroa with fungus?

WOW - this guy is the homeopathic king of bee treatments.

I wonder how many simple, trusting beekeepers will now take some of this clowns statements as fact?

Re: Queen only laying drone brood in spring.

Pollen - no problems, the workers have been bringing in pollen throughout spring up to this point. Just had nothing, apart from drone brood, to feed.
Honey - lots of stores left.
    Workers - this is...

Small Top bar colony. 15 Bars filled out from the previous summer. ( 4 foot - 32 bar hive)

During inspection in March I discovered that the hive was full of drones. Along with drone brood. No...

Re: Pole barn shed for my TBH's - good or bad idea?

    great idea
  10. Re: Something strange happened in one of my top bar hives this year.

EFB could also be a cause. But if your hive was not stressed or moved then I doubt this would be the problem. If it was you would see signs of darker dark spots in the brood comb where brood had died.

  12. Re: Can you give a new package too much old comb?

    Will be fine.
If they have surplus comb they have no reason to build new comb.
As long as their is new brood and eggs then everything is fine.

Re: How quickly should I add new bars

Between two straight combs is ideal. As the new one will be straight.
Once they are bringing in honey also give them room at the end.

    Re: TBH's in cold climates

Check out this website - lots of info.
    http://www.bushfarms.com/beestopbarhives.htm

Also - you can insulate the hive as much as you want. The easier it is for the bees to maintain a temperature,...

Re: Safe to do a direct release of the queen?

Agreed - direct release is the way to go:

    Re: Package Install Method?

This method worked for me. Install at last light and the bees don't want to fly. The queen started laying the next day as I had sealed brood 9 days later.

Re: Just lost my first hive

Ask for a refund - two fatal actions of the seller:
1- seal the hive with no ventilation. No matter how short a trip.
2- advised you not to open at night (I don't mean inspect the combs at night...

Re: Just lost my first hive

Very unusual for the bees to defecate in the hive. If they were sealed with no air vents, that could have done it.
Did they starve? Do they have any stores in the hive - I don't see any capped honey...

Re: Just lost my first hive

How exactly do you buy a nuc "that needs to be hived" ?? Normally a nuc box would be fine for the bees to live in for the short term.
Ask for a refund. Looks like very sickly unhealthy bees. ...

    Re: bait hive swarm

Does your hive have a screened bottom board?
Anyway - I agree with backyardphenomena - dump the bees in the hive, reduce the entrance.
