Re: Closing them in for a day

Yup. I nearly killed my first colony by screening them in when the weather was in the mid-70s.

Re: Mixing a few (5-12) gallons of syrup

For small amounts I mix it directly in the mason jars that I used for feeding.

Re: Monterey BT for wax moth prevention?

So have we established that BtK does _not_ kill bees? Has anyone here sprayed it on their combs and lived to tell the tale?

Re: Liquid form of BT Aizawai

This article from Syracuse Beekeepers says "Some other strains of Bacillus thuringiensis (BtK) are toxic to bees and humans, so beekeepers must resist the temptation of using other BT products. Do...
  5. Re: Cover crops that are good nectar sources in a Los Angeles Spring?

. . . and it looks like that photo is actually Phacelia tanacetifolia, not Phacelia campanularia.

  9. Re: Cover crops that are good nectar sources in a Los Angeles Spring?

    Hmmm. Fava beans are expensive.

My garden plot is 60 x 70 = 0.1 acre, and I want to divide that into 3 colors for my flag, :D, so about 0.03 acres per color.

    Crimson clover sows at 20-25...

Re: Just a Tiny Amount of Bee Quick?

I'd use one spray onto a branch, put the branch in the meter box, but the lid on the meter box, and then put the hive box a good 5-10 ft away.

The repellents work, but they're not crazy strong....

Re: Just a Tiny Amount of Bee Quick?

BeeQuick definitely works for evicting stragglers from a cutout or from a swarm branch.

But don't spray it directly on the bees! If you spray the bees you will kill them, and if you don't kill...
  12. Re: Do beekeepers actually get feral bees removed from homes?

I won't speak for anyone else, but as a local beek in Los Angeles I have personally experienced the following:

I got started by keeping a feral hive that was cut out from my wall.
    I have...

  15. Dequeened 13; requeened 10 days ago; now I have a new, small queen. ?????

This colony overwintered, but wasn't building up, so I dropped the old queen in alcohol on 4/28 and put in a new marked Italian queen. I think I may have screwed up by putting the queen cage at the...

  17. How many bees in a swarm the size of a softball/football/soccer ball/basketball?

I get this question all the time when I arrive to collect a swarm, "How many bees are in there?"

And I usually just say, "Oh, a few thousand," but without actually knowing.

    So how many bees...

    Re: bee-proof gloves?

How's the sizing on these? My LA Honey Co. gloves need replacing after 6 years, and I'm a legit XL in those gloves. I also need a set of Medium gloves for guests.

And yeah, don't tell people "you...

How big are these? They advertise "one size fits all," which just sounds utterly ridiculous.

    Easy Queen Capture

I collected this swarm on Friday, and the queen was super easy to spot and capture. Not only does she show up on the video immediately, but she also walked herself into the queen clip:

    Can Bees Read? 😂🤣😹

Or, more accurately, can bees distinguish large letters on the front of a hive box?

  22. Re: Is a "Ground Swarm" any different from a "Hanging Swarm?"

This is making more and more sense.

Maybe these queens run out of puff because they're just too full of eggs!

The ground swarm in my original post is boooooooming, and is by far my strongest...
