  1. Re-orientation if moved in the winter?

If a number of hives are moved in fall, or later, will they re-orient during cleansing flights/warm days?

Or will they all get lost, and die during the cleansing flight?

    Plan is to only move...
  2. Re: When do you add fondant/mountain camp sugar?

What sort of jar do you use?
  3. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

I was able to get Hive A to consume an extra gallon of syrup, which, for that hive, is probably equivalent to 2 pounds.

In addition, I added 2 full frames of honey.

In the brief period I was in...
  4. Re: Methods for dissuading more beekeepers in a particular location?

OK, so I listed my apiary with google business.

I learned a couple of things, none of which were particularly satisfying.

    1. One must register their physical address with google business, no...
  5. Orange pollen in Early october, Northeast US?

Would anyone here know what flower or source bees might be gathering orange pollen in the 1st week in October?

The goldenrod is 99% finished, so it's not goldenrod.

    Is this Aster pollen?

  6. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

    @kilocharlie

Where exactly do you purchase this schedule 55 or 77 corn syrup?
  7. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

    I wasn't clear.

when I was feeding, I did not open either hive. Hive A and Hive B were both closed, and both fed. Hive A barely gained any weight, while Hive B gained exactly the amount of...
  8. When do you add fondant/mountain camp sugar?

Is there a general consensus on when in the fall to add the fondant/dry sugar feed?

Is it better to add it later in the fall/early winter, or is it equally as effective adding it now, in Mid...

    Re: Band heater vaporizer.

I'm suspicious as to why this band heating vaporization doesn't do more damage to the bees.

My observations are clear: hives appear very healthy, and the ones that had high mite counts were...
  11. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

That's a terrifying prospect. I did have two hives open for about 5 minutes the other day, when I was looking at the brood. Otherwise, they're not generally open for very long.

    Now I'm going to...

    Re: Minty Taste

A local beekeeper provided me with Honey with a distinct minty taste. Its lighter in color as well.

I thought she had added something to the honey.

Now I'm seeing this and wondering myself. ...
  13. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

Is there any information on how much honey is required to raise brood? I've fed Hive A 30lbs of 2:1 , and they gained little weight.

    Re: Band heater vaporizer.

I too can attest that the 3M paper particulate mask is sufficient.
  15. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

In light of a number of members here suggesting passive robbing as a possibility, I've reduced the entrances down to their smallest setting in those hives that're being fed.

    Otherwise, I'm still...
  16. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

OK, well I've checked and re-checked.

Hive A has actually lost weight.

Hive B keeps gaining approximately the amount of weight I'd expect them to gain.

    I opened up Hive A.

    I found, in...

    Re: Buying an Extractor....

Don't forget to buy your apivar for $12 per hive, just for a single treatment. :D
  18. Re: This is getting ridiculous (Varroa and OAV treatment)

I can confirm, at least when I used Apivar, that it didn't even get close to killing 99% of mites.

It was effective, but certainly not as advertised.
  19. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

While I agree such a phenomenon is possible. It's not likely if it's 50 degrees F, and raining for 4 days in a row. During which over a gallon of feed was consumed.

    Something else is going on...

Re: I left my hive sealed up - UGH!

How far open was the SBB?
  21. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

Temps were too low for any robbing, and it was raining. Passive or obvious, it's not possible in my location.
  22. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

Hive A has a similar population to Hive B.

The weather's been rainy and cold for most of the feeding duration, so no obvious robbing has taken place.

I've been using 2 quart jars...
  23. Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

Long story short, I'm feeding hive A, and Hive B. Both are about 10lbs underweight.

Using 1/2 gallon feeders, one right after another, without more than a couple of hours between refills.

    2:1...

    Re: Buying an Extractor....

The cost of horse keeping makes beekeeping seem like shopping at the Salvation Army.
  25. How late into the season will bees collect Propolis to seal the hive?

Curious if anyone here knows how late into the Fall that bees will continue to collect propolis to seal the hive?

The reason I'm asking is because there's still some hive tops I needed to open to...
