    Re: Newspaper combine

I did the OAV at about 10AM this morning using the little toy I made.
I didn't do it as it is suggested - some of vapors went out. - maybe I lost some efficacy.

    Let's see how it goes.
    How soon...

    Re: Newspaper combine

Brood looked ok, although some of the puppies were drugged out :( to clean the cells - could be because of the beetle maggots.

I treated the for mites 2 weeks ago using OAD as I did last year and...

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

    Today I visited my hives.
I decided to open back side of SBBs and check what's going on in the hives.

One of the hive's sticky board had lots of pollen dropped on it. Also it had 2 wax moths...

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

I am checking my bees often after closing every crack of SSB and it looks they are working hard to manage the temperature inside of the hive: too much fanning is going on in front of the hive. I do...

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

How about entrance reducer? to what size should it be setup?
I can completely remove entrance reducer and put robbers screen upfront.

I was also recommended to rotate the boxes, put the bottom...

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

    Rader,

I just was wondering how much close I should keep my SSBs?
Can I give bees a crack for ventilation or keep it "sealed" closed?

How about entrance reducer? It is currently on it's large...

Re: Bottom Board - Solid or Screened ?

I can tell you that my hives, when I just got my nucs, were filled up with SHB. Last one I noticed in March or April.
Same with mites. Last year I did a series of OAD, this year I haven't done...

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

I will keep the SSBs closed to see what is happening.

There are few thins what bother me:
If bottom deep is not used, is there a chance of SHB and Wax Moth getting in?
    I overwintered last...

Re: Bottom Board - Solid or Screened ?

This is what I thought would be the "right" management and following it before while.

What confused me is: my hives are 3 deeps and, some how, bees are disregarding the bottom deep and:
    1. one...

Today is very hot and humid - they are bearding the hive :(

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

Generally I would agree with you.
I am all for naturally made environment since bees lived in the environment with small entrance/exit, make more sense to give them closed space.

    Once I was...

Re: Laying Worker - Easy Fix!

I would agree with this, but have few comments and questions:
I think it is very hards to find a frame of brood every week if the other hive is coming out of winter too and new, just mated, queen...

Re: What's going on? mismanagement ?

I closed both sides of the SBB and now the hive turned to be louder and the bees are fanning at the entrance.

    Any comments?
    Thanks,

Re: Bottom Board - Solid or Screened ?

    colby,

Do you keep your screened bottom boards closed or opened? when do you close them and when open them?

What is the brand of your SSB?

It looks I am leaning to the conclusion that...

Re: Bottom Board - Solid or Screened ?

Re: Bottom Board - Solid or Screened ?

    They don't :)
By some beekeepers experience, the ideal size of mesh is #8 (or 1/8"). Smaller than 1/8" they propolize, bigger than 1/8" - thy go through :)
    There is no magic here.

    Re: laying worker

you can also split your LW hive between other colonies by "newspaper merge" :) but it would take you longer and more resources.

I have 2 hives that I started last year. During last year I grow from 1 deep to 2 deeps and went through the winter well. Both hives did very well and even better - they were so strong so...
