  1. Re: Lanternfly control efforts impacting bees?

I received the notice as well and have offered my sample. They will be sending me a container and return envelope. I was also told that the testing and processing take "a very long time" so we will...

    Re: Todays Honey Prices!

I was at Longwood Gardens by Philadelphia this weekend. They had 8.5 oz. jars of honey in their gift shop for $19.95.

    Re: Too early to split?

I'm in PA and have split my one strong hive twice already-- pulling frames with capped queen cells and putting them in a nuc.

    Over-summering candy board?

I made candy boards for my two hives this past winter, simply packing moistened sugar on a wire mesh inside a wooden frame. The bees ate about half the sugar. Will this keep until next winter or are...

    Re: Save the failing hive?

Thanks for all your good comments. I did not get back in the hive yesterday so that brief window of opportunity is gone, as are likely that handful of bees. There was no larvae/brood with that small...

    Save the failing hive?

Rare 60° here today and I took a peek in my two hives. One is booming with ten full frames of bees. The other one has just a handful, including the queen, sandwiched between two frames. Anything I...

    Ballast stones?

I came across this article this morning which talks about bees carrying small stones for ballast when flying in a storm? Completely new to me after ten years with the bees. Fact or myth?

Re: Dead bees and pupae on landing board

Thanks for all your responses. I was able to get in all three of my hives just now between the rain and added Mite-Away strips to each. The 24 hour sticky board showed between 250 and 300 mites. I do...

Re: Dead bees and pupae on landing board

I did a 24 hour sticky board count about 4 weeks ago and had a count of about 45. I put the sticky board in again today. I started this hive with a nuc in the spring. It grew quickly. I've decided...

Dead bees and pupae on landing board

Lots of dead bees and pupae on the board. A bunch of bees crawling on the ground, but I looked at a number of them and didn’t see any deformed wings. I opened up the hive. Going by weight the upper...

    Re: 75 degrees today

No, they went into the winter with lots of bees and possibly too many hive beetles. Maybe I fed syrup too late into the fall, since there is still some that is uncapped. I was thinking that with the...

78° here right now. Pile of dead bees still there where my hive was a month ago.

Re: Menards has honey for $2.33 a pound

Thanks, Greg. Agreeing too, esp. on the unique local market, e.g. we also buy free-range happy chicken eggs from another neighbor, $1/dozen.

By "my neighbor" I meant local beekeeper, not Walmart.

Re: Menards has honey for $2.33 a pound

Except when my neighbor sells his for $4.50/lb. so I sell mine for $5. But as a hobby it is still cheaper than golf or skiing.

    Re: Black balls on excluder

I took out the excluder last winter for the first time and ended up with brood in the super. Trying to avoid that. I know there are a variety of opinions on this.

    Re: Black balls on excluder

I think you are right. I do have an opening at the top of the super. I was thinking they looked like a large wasp head. Hadn't thought of drones. I'll still try to get a close-up pic.

    Re: Black balls on excluder

I can possibly do that on Thursday when it is to get up to 53°. This hive does have SHB issues that I haven't gotten under control, so I wouldn't be surprised about that connection. The cd case trap...
