  1. Re: Ugh, think I'm losing a six week old nuc hive. Did I do the right thing?

You have to consider the possibility of EFB. You could get a test kit for about fifteen dollars. Leave that frame in there and take all precautions to prevent the spread of disease. Do not share...
  2. Re: Swarms keep coming back to this house-how to discourage them from entering?

Sounds like a dream come true for the beekeeper. If he can't get rid of all of the hive, all that can be done is seal up better. I would put up a swarm trap to see if they will go in there.
    The...
  3. Re: Stopping a swarm if you have no empty comb and no other hives to place frames in

Johnny, swarming is complex and not fully understood, but we know the queen and a bunch of other bees that fly (foragers to make it straightforward) leave the hive and establish a new one elsewhere....

Re: 2 frame nuc for setting aside queen cell

Much depends on your locality. It's summer here and 85F right now. But when I got up this morning, it was 52F. Not an unusual occurrence in the mountains. Insulation would alleviate chilling the QC ....
  5. Re: What is the best way to handle honey bound Deeps??

Common problem. Have you tried baiting the supers? Its difficult with deeps and med supers. You could try dribbling heavy syrup on a few frames. Brood will bring them up too. Some add a temporary...

    Re: Even Split Question

Kevin, JW is almost certainly correct on this. I am more or less thinking out loud. If your parent hive is queenright, a theory I had is blown to pieces. J
  7. Re: Stopping a swarm if you have no empty comb and no other hives to place frames in

Can you make a screen board? Screen stapled to a shim will work. You could try separating the bulk of the hive from the foragers. Place the queen, queen cells and as much capped and open brood in one...

    Re: Processing Cappings

Can you post links to those twinoaks? Are these bags any different from the bucket strainer bags? Thanks, J

    Re: Queen Acceptance ??????

Beemandan, see Kevin's other post about doing a split. It appears that he missed some QC when he made the split so they were already making them IMO. Unless he is talking about a different hive. J

    Re: Even Split Question

They have to be swarm cells started before the split, don't they? Have you looked in the parent hive?
This would be a good example of why you should clean the bottom of frames. When it gets like...

    Re: Strange event

Twice I have had rogue bees in otherwise gentle hives. It was unexplainable and out of character. One would chase anyone on the patio like a yellow jacket does. In my case, killing the individual bee...

    Re: Queen Acceptance ??????

They must have already started the cells because it takes 8 days to cap. They might have been starting a supercedure. Check the parent hive. There may be cells in there too. J

    Re: Queen Acceptance ??????

What day of the week did you make the split? If you waited too long, I would guess that they had committed to making their own.
Hard to tell if they were being aggressive in the vid. Next time use...

    Re: Unknown Bee Behavior

Trin, I don't think that the bees are not working because it is too hot. If it were cooler, they would be in the hive essentially not working. They are bearding to cool off the hive.
    Some believe...

Re: Anyone use Masonite internally in hive?

I use it,smooth side out, glued to foam board for follower boards. No problems but gluing it to foam board would prevent warping. J

    Re: Even Split Question

JP, I see what you are saying but its really pushing the envelope on the timeline, isn't it? But I have seen that myself. If Kevin is seeing "lots" of QC now, they should have at least been started...

    Re: Even Split Question

Are you sure you have identified the hive with the queen? I think you need to go into the other half and see what is going on there. It's odd that you are now seeing a lot of QC in the half you split...

    Re: Drone congregation area

The question has me wondering. What if the queen fails to mate? I know that after a period of time she can no longer be fertile. Do they kill her? At what point do they decide enough is enough?
    I...

Re: Need Help with Bee Math - Swarm Cell Timing

MSL is correct, but what you are describing are queen cups, not cells. I would check every 5 days and if they get charged, make your split. J

Re: Need Help with Bee Math - Swarm Cell Timing

Kate, all hives will make drones. It is something to watch out for but doesn't mean they are about to swarm. What is your hive configuration?
If you do not have 2 full boxes of deeps drawn yet, I...

    Re: Drone congregation area

The bottom line is you don't know so we don't know. Your neighbour could have hives and there could be so called feral bee hives in the woods behind your house.
If you like your queen, go ahead...
