  1. Swarms keep coming back to this house-how to discourage them from entering?

A fellow beekeeper has been back to the same house every year for 5 years to remove a swarm from the same place. Sounds like he is not doing a good job of sealing, though he says that he thinks he...
  2. Put undrawn honey super BETWEEN brood boxes to get drawn?

A fellow mid-MD beekeeper recently added a medium honey super with undrawn plastic foundation BETWEEN brood chambers. The bees drew it out completely within a week. Now he wants to know what to do...

Re: New mated queen but seeing multiple eggs

You all made an excellent point. When I opened the 5-frame nuc yesterday, I found a frame of foundation I had put in there back on June 6. The foundation was not drawn out! Hardly touched. So,...

New mated queen but seeing multiple eggs

I received mated queens from a reputable producer in GA. I installed them into 5-frame nucs June 6. Checking back a week or so later I saw lots of eggs and the queens. Things looked great.

Re: Double screen board for combining?

One more point. Maybe I am confused. Do colonies happily combine because they have a common ambient smell? If that is the case, I would imagine that a double screen would work. Or, do they combine...

    Double screen board for combining?

I do not use a double screen board for combining. I use newspaper.

I think that a common misconception is that the queen pheromone wafts through the air and completely fills the entire space much...

    Re: Difficulty opening stuck beeboxs

Pry one corner up as far as you can. Open a small gap along front edge. Insert wedge (I use a small, steel one) to hold open. Then use hive tool to force down those lower frames that are stuck to the...

    Re: 60lbs. Of honey

Comments focusing on cost. How about taste? I purchased a 5 gal bucket from a commercial guy in mid-MD two years ago. $160 I think. He called it clover honey. I wanted to donate the honey to a local...
  11. Re: Can I drop 5-frame nuc into the top brood box to requeen after doing newspaper?

This really caught my attention. If direct release into a queenless hive is doable, why all the fuss about cages and corks and candy end and leaving for three days. I am missing something here. Even...

Veil with clear panel available anywhere?

As my eyes age, I find I am more and more often removing my traditional veil to be better able to see eggs, especially when standing in shade. Doing so is not a problem most of the time. But at...
  13. Re: Can I drop 5-frame nuc into the top brood box to requeen after doing newspaper?

You are close. First, I have seen others use a QE on top of the combining newspaper. What is the reason for using a QE? In my case, the bottom is queenless so no QE would is needed, right? Regarding...
  14. Can I drop 5-frame nuc into the top brood box to requeen after doing newspaper?

I have a double and a triple that need a new queen. Mid-MD. 10-frame deeps. I have some nice 5-frame deep nucs just getting started with new mated queens that are laying well. I was going to do a...
  15. Re: Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus? Any treatment for?

Yes, dead bees on ground out front. Starting to smell. Enjoying the URL. CBPR section begins at time stamp 33:50.

AR, good idea about spraying. BTW, made my own bee strainer:

  16. Re: Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus? Any treatment for?

I broke the affected colony down to a single deep. Am combining with a strong nuc to see what happens. The comb that remains in the single deep has, of course, been exposed to the virus. It is what...
  17. Re: Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus? Any treatment for?

That is what I thought, thus unavoidable and I could treat all day every day and not necessarily stop this type of virus. Thanks.
  18. Re: Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus? Any treatment for?

These comments give me hope. I would not burn, btw, I would shake into tub of soapy water. :) Regardless, seems like our experiences are similar. One of the two hives has packed away a decent amount...
  19. Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus? Any treatment for?

A month ago a couple hives here in mid-MD starting exhibiting what appears to be symptoms of chronic bee paralysis virus. Have yet to do mite count, but hives treated with Apivar in July then OAV at...
  20. Can mated queens be maintained in battery box in which they arrived for long?

I anticipate ordering 25 mated queens for our club. They come in a battery box with lots of attendants, moist sponge and some candy. How long can the queens be kept that way. If a club members cannot...
  21. Hard to find queen when wanting to replace her

I am in mid-MD and want to replace some queens. Problem is I have a hard time finding them. I have double and triple 10-frame brood chambers. Currently they are all supered up. Is searching frame by...

Queens in battery box for how long

I will be ordering 25 queens from Gardner's in GA. They come in a battery box with a bunch of attendants. I will be getting some for myself and others. How long can the queens stay in the battery box...
  23. Re: how to requeen production colony during the flow?

I had tried the technique of first adding a HS of foundation plus two HS of drawn comb. The first HS of foundation is supposed to keep the queen from going up into the comb, so acts like a QE in...
  24. how to requeen production colony during the flow?

I am in mid-MD. The flow is on. A production colony has three honey supers over to deep brood boxes. The colony is queenless. How do I introduce a new queen? Italian mutts. Should I remove the...
