    Re: Smoker Fuel

Pine needles. I find a couple big pine trees every spring, after mud season. Rake up 2-3 trash bags full of needles. Pinecones are allowed. Toss them in the wood shed to stay dry. Bring a...

    Re: A stumper: errant queen

    Any other beekeepers near you?
  3. Re: mixing different foundation cell sizes

I tested Lusby's 4.9 cell size for 16 yrs treatment free. My conclusions:

    1. After 16 yrs bees did NOT draw 4.9 consistently with regression method (wax foundation). Only plastic foundation would...
  4. Re: how to requeen production colony during the flow?

Yes, just like you say will work. How did they become queenless? Make sure they haven't started cells or have a virgin in there or your queen will be rejected.

    Re: Italian queen breeder suggestions

I appreciate your answers guys. Was hoping for more responses. I hope that people aren't replying because they don't want to hurt others businesses. I asked a specific question about Italian...

Re: Bees not expanding to new frames

I can't tell from your pics but since you have capped brood over several frames I'm guessing you have a queen. Are you feeding? It takes young bees and nectar or syrup for them to get rolling. So...
  8. Re: Effective to simply keep cutting out swarm cells?

Fighting against there natural tendencies is a losing proposition. Easier to artificially swarm them. They get to reproduce, you maintain control, and everyone wins. To set there and chop out...

    Re: Brushy mountain wood ware

I can get 1x12 @ $1.40 a foot including tax. Make a deep hive body cost around 8.50 ea. But like everyone else I have plenty of things to get done. Buy commercial grade boxes from Betterbee as...
  11. Re: Can you run an 8 frame hive with a single brood box?

I think allot has to do with the type of bee you keep also. Keep the type of bee that are strong brooders and they may starve to death. Russian bees would do excellent. Along with many carniolan...

    Italian queen breeder suggestions

So I'm looking to introduce some Italian stock to my apiaries. I haven't bought Italian queens in at least 15 years. I remember using Wilbanks Italians years ago but I prefer not to get queens from...

Doesn't say they are acorn, but they are, bought a case last week. Black was out of stock so got white. Give them a call if you have doubts, but its acorn that I received.

    Re: Acorn Frames

Betterbee is selling them now instead of pierco. Not sure how the shipping will be though. Hopefully someone can chime in with something closer.
  15. Re: Brood Nest Size recommendations... clarification

When I started keeping bees around 36 yrs ago I was taught to keep bees in triple deeps. We never heard of 8 frame equipment or TBH's. We made honey and didn't pollenate. We used the concept of...

    Re: Selling five frame Nucs.

I would avoid taking other peoples frames. I have seen some homemade stuff over the years that violates all rules. Not to mention disease.
  17. Re: Removing capped frames to control colony size?

Just like Lloyd says. You probably got a few spicy drones mated to your queen. Gotta change genetics. Weakening a colony has nothing to do with how nice they are.

Re: Snap decisions in the apiary

Doing nothing is often the hardest decision to make. Its often our nature to feel like we need to do something. Which is what usually causes the issue we create for ourselves.

    Re: Building Hive Bodies Video

Nice video. I like that they use rabbit joints. To me box joints aren't worth the extra effort. Especially with todays glues.
  21. Re: Does dong a bunch of walk away Nuc splits count as queen rearing?

OTS system works. I use it too. Some years I use it exclusively. Or I graft along side using it. Here is what I wrote for those looking for an intro into TF beekeeping, but by no means do you have...

Re: pollen sub patty tweak question

I usually make 3-4 5# patches in my kitchen aid at a time. Cause I hate cleaning 5 gallon buckets with sub stuck to it along with paint mixer. Kitchen aid is easier to scrub. But that's just me....

Re: pollen sub patty tweak question

Currently using vegetable oil. But I've used olive oil, canola oil, or whatever I have that is cheap at the time. Think I used canola last year w/o issues. Maybe oil type matters what do others...

    pollen sub patty tweak question

Not looking for a new recipe. Finding my patties are drying out quickly this year. Should I up the water content to make them softer or add more oil to them?
  25. Re: Does dong a bunch of walk away Nuc splits count as queen rearing?

Yes it is queen rearing of the most basic form I suppose. It can be done anywhere but the window is smaller the farther north you go. Personally the OTS method is better. A large colony that is...
