Re: Re-orientation if moved in the winter?

I think they will be fine, no further than that is.
I plan to rearrange mine this Winter also. I will be moving some of them a bit further, so I am going to install robber screens as I move them to...

From what I have read, Sunflower and Canola crystallizes very quickly.

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

We have had two nights in a row of frost heavy enough to kill the garden. At 10:30 this AM the bees are flying as though it is a nice Spring day.

Re: I left my hive sealed up - UGH!

In this busy world in which we live, distraction is not uncommon. The surprise at seeing the rag still stuffed in the entrance and the thought of the worst case scenario likely made quite an...

    AGFresh,

Have you eaten any of it? Is it tender or tough?

Re: Strange Comb Honey Wax Color

Yes, it looks like brood comb to me.

  11. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

I have also read this, but it has not been my experience either.

Mid Summer of my second season, one of my three, highly touted treatment free colonies began failing. I shook them out and used...

Re: Is this robbing in progress? Anything to do?

You may also want to make or buy some robber screens.

Re: Is this robbing in progress? Anything to do?

If it is, it is just getting underway. I don't see any bees on the ground fighting, but it does appear there is some fighting on the bottom board.
If there is any chance it is robbing, I would close...

  15. Re: Methods for dissuading more beekeepers in a particular location?

Here in Arkansas, if your apiary is registered, only the landowner next to you can place hives that he owns on his property unless you agree to allow non owners to do so.

  17. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

I just always took it as true, also. Now that I think about, maybe the QEs were put on to contain the Drones as well.

It has been way to long since I read about it and I'm not even sure of the...
  18. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

That's the story I have also always heard. Were there no actual controls in place or was it just poorly executed so they needed to create a scapegoat?

  19. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

I was referring to the original, but the one at your link looks easier to follow.

  20. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

The Drones won't be ale to come and go, but I have heard people say they do that.

  21. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

When I downloaded the PDF, I changed the name of the shortcut on my desktop, and for some reason I lost the direct link. That was the first time that has happened. I must have done something wrong....

    SWARMING
ITS CONTROL AND PREVENTION by L. E. Snelgrove. You can download a free PDF.

It was confusing to me at first, but after physically employing them it all made sense.

    Sorry, no...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

The brood nests are contracting and a lot of stores are going into the brood frames. Some colonies are putting small amounts of nectar in the honey supers, although very little is being capped....
  25. Re: DON'T Smoke 'um if you got 'um OR How I Ditched My Smoker

I get it, I think. Especially from a hobbyist perspective. Why would anyone choose a hobby that costs a lot of money, most of the tasks take place during the hottest time of the year while wearing...
