    Re: Band heater vaporizer.

Not arguing the point. I learned about aerosols in my high school chemistry class, let's see, back in 1977. Long before wiki. The classic example for a solid is smoke. Suppose the same can be said...

    Re: Global Warming

Amazing how what we are taught in school by well meaning teachers with an agenda can alter our understanding of reality.

    Re: A question about feeding

How so? Did you try to drink it right after racking? Mead needs three months in the secondary and at least a month or two after bottling, or so they say. Around six months from start to drinkable....

    Re: Band heater vaporizer.

LJ, look up the definition of aerosol. That is what OAV truly is. From wiki:

    Re: Hive Beetle Memes

I like the third one best. Direct and to the point.
  6. Re: Too late to add frame of eggs to queenless colony in MD?

OAV is not quite that fast acting. I would wait three days and then do the combine. I do not hold out much hope for either colony if mite loads are that high this late.

    Re: Frame rack

One of my planned projects this winter is to build a shelf unit consisting of open runners about 18" apart to hang the finished frames on. Entire unit will be sized to hold betrween100 and 200 deep...

    Re: Mid-Missouri Hello

Your location appears now because of "moderator magic"! I added it after I saw gww's post. I knew you had mentioned it in your first post so it was easy enough.

    18% ABV Sweet mead

So this is my first attempt at making mead, and just to keep it interesting, I bumped my head and decided to make an 18% abv sweet mead.
Here is what I have done so far and the ingredients I used....
  12. Re: For storing used boxes would cedar ball work as good as Moth balls?

Jim, I tried using Bt.k but that did not work out as well as I had hoped. Frames that had had brood in them were still destroyed. Now, most of my remaining frames are on the hives where they will...

    Re: Hello from India

Welcome to Beesource. I had no idea that bees helped pollinate coffee, but I see now that they can increase yields by up to 25%. Pretty good reason to start keeping bees!
  14. Re: Too late to add frame of eggs to queenless colony in MD?

Dave, if the hive appears strong, let it ride out. It is way too late to produce a queen and chances are good there is a queen in there that has stopped laying. If your friend does not see some brood...
  15. Re: For storing used boxes would cedar ball work as good as Moth balls?

Jim, cedar does not control wax moths according Michael Bush and others. If it did, supers made of cedar would be all the rage.

Please note that moth balls and moth crystals are not the same...

    Re: A question about feeding

All this talk of mead, including my own suggestion, prompted a quick trip to the local homebrew suppy store. $125 USD later and I now have a 6 gallon plastic primary fermenter, a 5 gallon glass...

    Re: Mid-Missouri Hello

I much prefer using the desktop version. Easier to navigate and shows poster's location in upper right-hand corner. (And fewer revenue generators.)

Re: Making my own lip balm

You have heard the expression "oil and water don't mix"? Beeswax is oil based and honey is water based. Consider experimenting with an emulsifier like lecithin to keep things mixed.

Hello back to someone in (usually sunny) South Florida. Good to have you with us. Like your Central American friends, your bees will be busy year round. That presents a few unique challenges that...

Re: Startup Company Making "Super Bees"

I can see a new and very expensive honey variety coming from bees that coked up. Night Blooming Jasmine honey.

  21. Re: new beehive designed to stop bees from dying over winter, and to have 24/7 monito

In a way, these straw man side tracks are on topic, in that they show that others have had what they considered brilliant and innovative ideas that simply fell flat when presented to a broader market...

    Re: A question about feeding

Congratulations on having more honey than you can use. You may do as you indicated but, have you considered making a small batch of mead? A little something to warm you up when it gets cold?

    Re: Caged queen killed

What you are describing is classic for the "queenless" nuc to have a queen that is simply no longer laying. The stronger nuc viewed the caged queen as unecessary and killed her by stinging through...

    Re: Potato cultivating....

Good to know about the ashes. Had not considered the K component. Years ago I ran a bunch of potassium that I got from my work on some root crops. Banner year for the beets and the carrots.
  25. Re: U of Montana Apprentice Level Beekeeping Class

Not all master beekeeper programs are created equal. I have heard that the ones offered by EAS and U of M are among the best. Virginia's program is supposed to be modeled on the EAS one and is a...
