    Re: Plant ID please

Yes, and the pics do not show that.

BeeDuto: you are right the flowers are not the same. I took a quick look at your pictures on my cell and wrongly assumed horse chestnut. My apologies.

    After...

    Re: Under Supering

What kind of room is there in the brood nest for the queen to lay and what do the bottom of the medium frames look like?
Are the bottom of the medium frames empty and polished or do they hold...

    Re: Learning Grafting

I've found that Dry makes it harder to get them off unless they are already floating in a big white pool, not all are, which gets picked up with the larvae and transferred to the cell with no issues....

    Re: Under Supering

seems to me you are late in adding room to that colony. why is there only one super on now? is the brood nest open or full of nectar?

if they've already got it in them to swarm it doesn't matter...

Hey look, this guy isn't capable of handling the business he has. It has been going on for some time. Don't take peoples hard earned money and waste their valuable time is something that should be...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

That'll be one for the record books, The Year With No Nectar.

I've seen better years and worse years but never a year where the bees couldn't make honey.
Doolittle even wrote a book on it, the...
  9. Re: EFB Pro-active treatments - Now or wait until later in the season?

This was posted on bee-l in a discussion on EFB on 6/19/20.
My opinion is it is a very well worth while read touching on the current EFB mania.
The problem as I see it is that once the panic sets...

    Re: 60lbs. Of honey

    Some beekeepers chase the flows.
Maybe they were reselling honey THEY bought if they don't travel and chase.
I'm curious, what did you pass it off as?

    Re: Honey moisture question

Mustard nectar, and all brassica cover crops crystallize quickly. Any volunteer mustard of planted cover crop growing there in the early spring?
If not what is responsible for your spring flow?

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Yup. Too much room in the brood nest.
Try a single deep brood box, 8 or 10 frame no matter, when running for honey and they'll put the nectar where it belongs, in the supers.

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

    Strong hives make honey.
Hives of equal strength make a similar amount of honey.
Weak hives barely collect enough to survive.
An apiary of colonies of each strength give full supers on some and...
  17. Re: hive not healthy; how to diagnose? Are there any labs doing diagnostic testing?

Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

I fear the new mann lake is nothing like the old mann lake many were used to dealing with.
Quality, selection, service, pricing are all in question now.
It is the new mann lake business model....

    Cloverdale,
    Hope you guys are well.

I think those queen cells you mention being capped and empty weren't always so. They held a queen but the cap was 'hinged' on a portion and fell back into...

  22. Re: There's a fine line between feast and famine in the Spring.

Re: Using old queen excluders, really old

Nice rebuild. Looks like you used pine?

I like these excluders very much as well and have a bunch. Wish I had more of them.
How do you place them on the hive? cross-wires facing down or up?

  24. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

    What?
No reports yet of compromised or dead colonies or of freeze damage to the nectar plants of late spring, summer and fall so the doom and gloom fears must not have materialized.

Re: How long can bees be confined to hive?

It's good advice to know what is being sprayed and when and to read the labels.

I pollinate apples and the growers cut the orchard floor during the afternoon and spray beginning at sunset of the...
