Re: Making a split / "nuc"

    I just love Crowders methods.:applause::applause:

No two top bars the same but they all fit! No fancy molding or guides giving the ladies a straight place to start new comb.

    Watching this...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

The only reason I ask is that my hives are limited on direct sunlight. The shed roof doesnt allow morning sun until around 9:00am and the evening is cut short by my 6' privacy fence. But Yeah, my...

I started with 2 packages and am going into my second winter with 3 hives. I built my boxes double thick with 1" blue board on top and bottom.

Re: Can we save our colony?

I am planning on building one of these this winter. Was already figuring in a robber screen and thru the bottom feeders/traps.
I am confused / concerned about the ventilation. With my top bars,...

    Re: Bee Death Rate question

Looks like they are re-orienting and figuring out their new entrance. Looking for any nook or crannie besides the big hole you left them :waiting:

Mine despised me so much they bored a hole...

    Re: Bee Death Rate question

    Nice looking hives.

If those are from hive cleaning, my ladies usually carry them all the way out of the robber screen all the way to the ground. They should be used to the screen in a few days...

Oh yeah. Both mine were primed and ready for the spring. I thought I was being aggressive trying to stop it but that switch had already been thrown!

Re: OK so it is August 26 honey extraction?

I dont have observation windows on my hives and even keeping a close eye on them, by the time I realize something has happened, the ladies have been planning "it" for a while and "it" happened last...

Re: OK so it is August 26 honey extraction?

Thats gonna be some delicious honey!

I inspected my #3 hive yesterday and they were getting quite testy by the time I was done. I was gonna inspect #1 this am but they were bouncing off of me...

Re: OK so it is August 26 honey extraction?

I would take no more than 1 or 2 bars at the most to harvest even if you think you are setting good. I swiped about that and left 8 full bars of capped honey in my first year hives to over winter...

    Re: Backyard Hives

This may be aggravating the normal dearth I am in. I hope it didnt wipe out the Goldenrod and Milkweed that should start up soon. Still a steady stream of pollen coming in.

    You can see the...

Re: Cathedral Hive Progress - 17 weeks in

Definitely making no claims of having it all figured out.:kn:

Just like a neighbors dog that has fleas, ticks, distemper, kennel cough, rabies, etc. You have to take care of your pets or their problems will quickly become others. The statement may be...

Re: Wax foundation attached to top bars ?

The bars I started with I cut a saw kerf down the length just deep enough to use a finish nailer to attach them, cut wax coated plastic foundation so it would stick out about an inch and just air...
  21. Re: OA Treatment - OA in Everclear through Fogger

Simple heating of OA alone sublimates and crystallizes when it cools back down. (Right?) The alcohol is the carrier so it will work out of that kind of fogger? If the alcohol is coming out as a...

  25. Re: Oxalic Acid Treatment for Varroa Mites on colonies with brood

My last inspection of my weakest hive showed just a few remaining bees with deformed/shriveled wings and one or 2 k-wings. This hive almost succumbed to mites over winter but swarmed in the spring...
