Sticky: Re: bone head split so far, somebody save the day.

    Whatever works, gww.
Clearly it is either you, or the bees, or together - you still manage to say afloat somehow.
This can not be said about me!
---- even dry sugar did not do it in the season...

Sticky: Re: bone head split so far, somebody save the day.

Asters are only good enough to stay afloat so that bees don't eat into the stores.
They are not strong enough producers to, somehow, give you any significant boost.

I'd dump dry sugar when proper...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Thanks, od.
    Pretty much confirms the same.
The roof maintenance/status should totally be integrated and synchronized with the solar project - they are going hand in hand.
    Deflections of a sales...

Re: Open mesh floor, horizontal hive

In my original long hives I tried something of L. Sharashkin design.
See "ventilation slot" in the floor here:
    https://horizontalhive.com/how-to-build/layens-beehive-design.shtml

    But now me...

Re: Open mesh floor, horizontal hive

You can always use captions/auto-translate - helps.

The fellow experiments with mid-way solutions between totally solid floors vs. totally open floors - they too have the same old discussion of...

    Re: Stores and Hive Volume.

LJ, here is a very worthy channel of a dedicated Warre beek (will require the auto-trans for some - but those willing to watch and learn should find it useful).

Re: Open mesh floor, horizontal hive

Spaced out bottom planks - exactly what I am testing in my current CVH project.
    58639

The non-bee-passable slots between the planks (1/16" for me) can be easily cleaned out by some wire...

Re: Open mesh floor, horizontal hive

Mesh floors for vertical hives - consider how small the ratio of the opening to the hive volume is.
Now - consider the same if you open up the floor of a long hive.
See the difference in the ratio?...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

I hate holes in my roof, even if patched.
    No holes is the best.

Now, my current roof is 15 years old (asphalt shingles).
Had one bad hail too - I did not replace at that time, but just keeping...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

Good question and no-one will ever tell it, IF they are honest.
Interestingly (per my Facebook quote above) - one may has to pay off the outstanding balance BEFORE attempting to sell the house....

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    OK, doing some basic math.

0)Option #0 (current consumed electricity) at $103/month average - $24,720 in 20 years (very optimistic low ball)
00)Option #00(very bad case - I let the costs double...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

So I did a little more research regarding this "solar company".
While there are many excited comments on the Facebook (majority are niceties about how quickly they installed the stuff, how small...

Re: Is Honey a Safe(r) Sweetener?

Granted we have already seen latest reports - the honey should be really treated and used as a natural medication during the high viral risks (which is year around anymore). And I mean the real...

Re: Queen on Inner Screen Cover

In my case (I use soft inner covers) the bees can always come up for any old reason.
    So, the queen also can.
But this is rather unusual - there is nothing there for the queen.

    I feel such...

Re: Queen on Inner Screen Cover

    Sure.
Had a case of the same this summer - accidentally found the queen mostly alone ABOVE the inner cover.
    She was escorted back inside.
Upon the next inspection, 2-3 weeks later, this particular...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Hah!
    Good idea.
In fact, IF one owns a Tesla, considerations for auxiliary power sources (solar, etc) change quite a bit in favor.

Also, I never though a Tesla could be that missing "battery" in...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Right - potentially.
They are really fudging the #s to make it look good.
I can see few one-time rate changes (IF approved by the utility regulators), but not the continuous growth of them.
    I...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Lots of good ideas.
    No time to respond yet.

BUT in general - issues of warranty/roof repairs/etc - I was verbally assured that just about everything is covered in some way.
    By the salesperson,...

IF anything, I am yet to be convinced in the solar's worth personally to me.

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

Thanks for the feedback so far.
I am yet to digest it, item by item.

I went ahead and took the time to scrub the proposal off any sensitive info.
    And here it is attached.
    The proposal does NOT...

    Re: The 'Gallup' Long Hive.

LJ, thanks for taking the time and the pics. Nice.

With my CVs, I too want to have a frame size (hence my new "standard" to be) where the frame is ~fully dedicated to a single use.
    Per my youtube...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Thanks for the pointers.

    Actually, I am decidedly NO.

But now that I got the estimate #s (they insisted), I want to see how they are trying to manipulate people into such projects.
    My boss got...
