    Re: Single brood chambers

So -- I saw this youtube video as well, and since he's in Canada I thought, "Maybe it works up there, but would it work in the deep south? Maybe our bees are active for longer, and so they need more...

    Re: Alabama

Update. Left the hive, are on the ground in front of it, 10 feet down. (Hive on the porch, ball of bees off the porch.) Thought maybe I overdid it with the lgo in the cardboard box, so I put the box...

    Re: Alabama

Neighbor posted on Nextdoor about a swarm yesterday. I went and gathered them up today. Oddly they were on the ground in the street -- yard folks had been pulling out a bunch of bamboo from behind...

    Re: Gone for months

You could also check at the local bee club to see if someone wants to buy them off you before you deploy. . . .

    Re: swarm on cairn

Quick update: Looked yesterday and was able to id capped honey, nectar, pollen, worker brood, uncapped brood. Didn't see the queen or eggs, but I'm sure that's me and not them and I didn't want to...

    Re: Frame spacing?

Also -- what are you thoughts on just packing those middle 6 - 8 frames as tight as they'll go without cutting them town (to encourage smaller brood comb), and giving more space to the outside ones...

Alas, Mr. Bush, I'm lazy. Do you know of anyone selling 1.25 inch foundationless frames?

    Frame spacing?

Can you run, say, 11 frames in the brood boxes and 9 in the honey supers without too much trouble? If you want to run 11, do you have to cut a bunch of frames down, or could you, say, shave a bit off...

    Re: swarm on cairn

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Lburou! We've moved them away from the street -- so at least we're good on that front. The thought of a virgin queen didn't even cross my mind, but that does make a...

    Re: swarm on cairn

OK -- so we went in today, quickly, just to have a look at what's up. (We're 9 days in.) They are pulling the foundation, and saving up nectar & pollen, but I didn't see eggs or larvae or the queen....

    Re: swarm on cairn

There may be a few drones, but don't seem to be many. They're definitely out and about foraging, and coming back -- the neighbor whose yard they landed in has 3 large ornamental cherries that are in...

    swarm on cairn

How would you handle this situation? Bees on a cairn? My gut says it could have been done better than what we did. Run down of what happened:

-My dad has kept bees in the past, didn't have any as...
  18. Re: 5 Frame honey bee nucs / Lot Of Ten / Limited Free delivery / 2019 Pre-sale - $16

Would you deliver to the Birmingham, AL area? Also -- looks like I'm right up against your deadline. Have I just missed out at this point? Oh -- and am I reading right that you can pick up fewer than...
  19. Re: Any other newbie getting frustrated with their new hive?

    Hi MsBeHaven.

I have a poor hive in Birmingham that I'm trying to save as well. Checking on them today, probably. (We requeened 2 weeks ago, after them failing to create a queen from brood from...

    Re: Insecticides and fungicides

Hm.. there was something about this on NPR not long ago. Initially, the GMO pest resistance was awesome, but the pests have evolved to be resistant to the pest resistance over the past few years. So,...
  22. Re: First-time beekeeper with hive dwindling to nothing

    Kit--

I don't know much, but if I were you, I'd go ahead and order a queen. A frame of brood might lead to a laying queen within a month or so, but I think that they'd be more likely to recover...

Re: Hudgins Apiary in Cedartown, Georgia...

Well... they do have queens now, as I just ordered one. And, boy have I had trouble finding one. It seems like lots of apiaries in the southeast are sold out at the moment. . . I'll have to follow up...
