Re: Keeping bees out of a swimming pool

Yep, adding chlorine bleach to water attracts bees. Every time I wash the driveway I get a lot of bees coming for a drink.

Very true. My point is to use the idea... just try it for yourself if it sounds good.

    Re: Credibility of Scientific Papers.

I'm not a scientist but I do realize that in beekeeping research there are SO MANY variables that doing tests and repeating to see if you get the same results is next to impossible. Every frame of...

Re: Will Politics Drive the Science?

Pesticides are not only killing the pollinators; we are also killing ourselves just slower. The problem is farmers must have pesticides in order to get a crop. We need pesticides that don't kill...

Re: A VERY hot hive - what next?

Yep, and wear good bee suits and gloves. That is a lot easier than LOOKING for the Q while the workers eat you lunch.

I stand corrected! I really don't know what dropped it but it works pretty well. The word ORGANIC drives me crazy.

    Re: Against Smoking Bees

I sometimes use MEADOW MUFFINS (dried cow turd) for smoker fuel... does that make my smoke organic? There is NO way you can assure bees have not visited flowers that have never had pesticide on them...

Re: Hello from eastern North Carolina

Beekeeping is good family fun. About half of our bee club (TAR RIVER BEEKEEPERS) are teams; moms/daughters, husband/wife, grandfather/grandson. We meet once a month for potluck dinner and a...

Re: Hello from eastern North Carolina

Welcome to THE FORUM. Take a step back and let them be bees. Keep them dry, ventilated, treated for mites especially in the fall and have food/water sources nearby. Make sure the queen has space to...

    Re: Open Feeding

Yes, you probably did. This time of the year when it is dry, no flowers, no nectar, scouts/foragers are searching. You drew bees from everywhere and when the source was gone they kept looking. If you...

    Re: Bone dry nuc

I agree with Lburou, open feeding is an invitation to robbing this time of the year. Feed syrup as long as possible inside. Dry sugar poured into the cells of some empty comb works too.

    Re: BeeCheck Opinion

My home county sprayed for mosquitoes last year. The operator contacted me, came by, and shut down his spraying 200 yards from the apiary.

Re: Wax moth prevention in storing

I freeze all my frames (even foundationless) after use and then BT Sprayed on or paramoth in stacked boxes or clear plastic tubs.
  18. Re: This is getting ridiculous (Varroa and OAV treatment)

Everyone who keeps bees has mltes. You may have colonies close by that were "mite bombs"; either wild bees or a treatment free apiary. Keep treating and talk to local beeks to see what they are...

The empty box above the inner cover works for me. i freeze them and give them back as winter feed. You can sprinkle sugar on the frames if you need additional feed.

Normal when they get too hot. Make sure they have good ventilation and space for Q to lay.
  24. Re: State spraying Merus 3.0 to combat mosquitoes in MI. Best precautions?

As long as they spray when it is dark you are probably fine. I would add a tarp loosely over the hive if they were spraying directly overhead.
  25. Re: Our First Forced Abscond, Battle Plan Did Not Survive First Contact

You guys did good for newbies. Entrance feeders cause robbing episodes, add an empty box above the inner cover and put the feeders in there. It knocks down the odor and keeps the syrup a little...
