  1. Re: Hive heists: why the next threat to bees is organized crime

I am guessing that the days of a beekeeper drooping off his hives in cali and then not staying with them through out the pollination contract are coming to an end. Or you will be forced to hire...

    Re: Pollen sub

I assume that by open feeding you mean outside the hive. It has to be warm enough for them to do that. I am not a biologist but I would be willing to bet it will take more than one or two days of...

    Re: Building (non-standard) plywood bodies

I get a lot of free wood from work. I use it to make tops, bottoms and nucs. I certainly wouldn't turn down 1 inch ply. As long as you keep the inside dimensions correct the extra 1/4 width won't...

    Re: Asian Giant Hornet

I am certainly keeping track of this as it is not that far away from me. I normally put meat based traps pot for yellow jackets. I wonder how much of it these Asian Giant Hornets would have to eat...
  5. Re: The interesting way this Russian man builds his bee boxes.

Bee boxes are for the beekeeeper not the bees. Heck bees will build in gas tanks, old tires or anything convenient.
  6. Anyone use (modified) dcoats plans for full size boxes?

I currently use a modified version of dcoats 5 frame nuc plans for my nucs. Mostly I use 3/4 inch material instead of 1/2 inch. Also I get a lot of free OSB, some plywood and a little sub flooring....

    Re: Building vs. Buying

I can buy finished boxes from mann lake cheaper than I can buy the wood locally. So it only makes sense to buy them.

I make all my own tops, bottoms and nucs. As I can make them for about a...

    Re: Painting Supers

Jerry painting the boxes makes them last longer. Personally I go to the rehab store ad buy other people castoff exterior paint for $4.00 a gallon. If you don't care about the color you can get top...

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

[QUOTE=JWPalmer;1777385]Mbear, I suspect this motorized hand truck could be modified to be a rather efficient hive transport. I have used it for its intended purpose and it works very well.

Re: What are the bees gleaning from chicken feed?

More importantly this is a clear sign that you need to give your bees some pollen sub.

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

I wonder why so many people want to reinvent bee keeping before they know how to raise bees in the first place. On the up side I will sell a number of people nucs this year to replace the ones I...

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

You need to be more clear in your question.

Are my hives to heavy to be picked up by hand? Yes
Are my medium supers full of honey...

    Re: Alternatives to Wooden Beehives?

If you need to make up cheap and easy boxes just take the dcoats (5 frame nuc plans)design and make it as wide as you want to. All straight cuts. I have made over 40 nuc boxes for just the cost of...
  15. Re: A new Year. What are your goals for the bees in 2020?

For me this is going to be the year of the nucs. I am currently building 40 nuc boxes. My goal is to start with two nucs and to keep splitting them as much as possible. I will also break one of my...

Re: Why do Beeks stack supers so high?

If you look at ian web site he talks a little bout it. He says that he runs 1200 hives. He can only process 500 hives a week and during the flow the bees fill out a box a week. So if your bottom...

Re: New England beekeeper's winter journal

Why in 14 days? You shouldn't have any brood right now. Pick the warmest day (so that the bees are as loosely clustered as can be helped) then treat! I always treat around thanksgiving and then...

    Re: Dry feed in winter

I make sugar bricks and put them in all my hives on January 1. I throw another in in the end of February with a pollen patty. Most of the time I take the second one out when it is warm enough to...

  24. Re: So, what did you scrounge today? Braggin encouraged

I don't need any more bees but as an experiment this year I am going to buy three nucs and grow them and split them as often as possible to see how many hives I end up with to winter over. So I am...
  25. Re: So, what did you scrounge today? Braggin encouraged

I just started a new job. I kept seeing plywood, underpayment the size of pallets. It is all used to hold awkward size things on pallets for shipment. The company sees them as trash and give them...
