    Re: Mite Away Quick Strips

swarmtrapper, perhaps they are expired? might make a difference and might explain the lack of color? JMTCW
  2. Re: Advice on Storing Capped Honey in a freezer

Thanks Ray. I appreciate your response. I guess we'll go for the cheaper one.

  3. Advice on Storing Capped Honey in a freezer

Hi All: I need some advice on storing capped honey, please. We run 2 deeps and a medium super year-round. Our original mentor suggested that we leave a medium honey super on for the bees--no...

Thanks Mr. C. That clears it up. Too bad for all the drones, though.

    MiteZapper

Hi All: Looking through my latest Bee Culture and came across the ad for the Mitezapper. Can anyone out there tell me how this thing is supposed to work? Seriously--this contraption begs at least...

Re: Bees removed api life var

When the bees remove or try to remove the ApiLife Var wafers, they spread the active ingredients around the hive. I think this is designed to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. Hope this...

Re: What were my bees doing?

Now I am going to have to google nasanov gland. This is a real body part?"

Gypsi-- yes, it's a real body part :-) You see it when the bees stand with their little behinds up in the air fanning...

Re: What happened to my hive?

    "Is Thymol safer then MAQS?"
From my experience, yes, but. . . Each chemical has its own set of side effects and problems. With thymol treatmets (Apiguard, ApiLife Var) you're treating for about a...

Re: Dealing with a hive infested with mites

JMTCW. . .We inherited a neglected (for at least 2 years) hive late August last year. MANY Deformed wing bees, really heavy mite load. Not having any equipment, nor knowing anything at all about...

Re: Bees at the hummingbird feeder.......

We live in an area of Jersey where there isn't much forage this time of year--goldenrod and asters notwithstanding, there just isn't much within reach of our bees. We are feeding all 3 hives (don't...

    Re: Apilife Var question

I'm thinking your hive doesn't have enough ventilation. I don't think you're supposed to use an entrance reducer when using these types of products (fumigants). Try removing the entrance reducer...

    Thanks for the info!
  14. Re: I'm DIY formic user and found hive beetle larvae on sticky board??

I also used MAQS this year and noticed the same thing. We fed our 2 packages intensely this year and, no doubt, contributed to a boon of SHB. There were many larvae in various stages of development...

    Re: Honey B healthy

I've used it for the 2 years we've been keeping bees. So far it really seems to help. The hives seem healthy and robust, the queens are good layers, the temperament is gentle no matter how much we...

Re: All My Bees Are Drowning!

We use the Mann Lake hive top feeder (the plastic one with the screening). I thought the plastic was too slick because the bees couldn't even get up through the feeder, so I scratched the surface...

Re: Bleach in bucket for bee water

It actually seems like a sound idea, but a couple glugs might be too much chlorine. I guess the idea is to keep the water fresh and to prevent nasties from growing in it. Maybe a little less...

    Re: What bug is this?

I agree it's a spider mite. They are plant-feeding insects. I guess the bees probably bring them back from foraging. Not harmful to bees in any way.

    Re: Strange bee behavior

Great pictures! Are you dry there (drought) or unseasonably hot? Could bee they're taking water or dew from the petals and sharing or robbing. I've seen something like that at my pond, and I lean...

    Re: One angry bee

We had one like that earlier this summer. Cute little girl. I thought maybe she was bucking for a promotion to queen or perhaps supreme ruler. After a couple days of getting dive-bombed and...

    Re: Thymol Crystals

Why not just use ApiLife Var or Apiguard and save yourself the trouble?
  23. Re: What kind of bee's are these? Do i need to be worried about my families safety?

Looks like the sand wasps we have here in Jersey. They won't bother you, but just don't step on one! OUCH!

    Re: Pesticide Kill

Skybolt, very interesting. I just had the same thing happen to my hives. #1 got hit the hardest--the foragers came back around mid-morning and died by the droves on the landing board. Walking in...
  25. Re: Fall/Spring Menthol AND Thymol treatments simultaneously?

Api-life VAR has menthol included in it, so you treat both types of mites in one treatment. I don't know if ApiGuard has menthol in it or not.
