    Re: Honey Refractometer

The honey being measure won’t yield variable results - that would be your refractometer. I have a $30 eBay unit and an Atago digital unit. One gives repeatable results. The other just yields...

Re: Mold? Are these hives ok?

It’s fine. Scrape off the worst of it and the bees will clean up the rest.

Re: No Brood Leaving the Winter Shed This Year

First pollen here yesterday. I put sub on the last week of March. The better sheltered yards and strong hives mostly turned it into brood. Smaller hives pretty much ignored it until this week. ...

    Re: Honey Refractometer

Perhaps they are as accurate, but it’s the precision that is the problem.

Re: Warming jackets for extraction equipment.

I just put a incandescent light bulb underneath and towards the outlet on the two Maxant 1400’s that I used to have. The outlet on them is too small and they would back up if the honey was low...

    Re: Honey Refractometer

If you are serious about producing honey, don’t bother with a cheap one. Get a good optical or digital unit. Cheap plastic optics degrade over time like all plastics. The temperature correction is...

    Re: Magazine advertisement return value?

Unless you have an ad specific promotion or coupon code, it can be really tough to evaluate effectiveness of print ads.

    Re: Uncapping..

I bought an old Cowen aluminum when I got to about 100 hives - it was available locally and the price was right. The Kelly jiggle knife seemed to be pretty common for larger operations in this area....

Re: pulling honey ideas looking for feed back

Stacking supers on an escape can work, but your boxes have to fit tight or you risk loosing the lot to robbing. There is also the problem of small hive beetle depending on the area and you need good...

Re: Cold syrup - pumping question.

How cold? I had good luck using a bucket heater like this in an IBC tote during the fall. Syrup was 2:1 and I was using a 2” trash pump....
  13. Re: Anyone care to take a stab at the make of this relic?

Do not use old/expired/temperature abused MAQS. The substrate yellows and breaks down, the special BASF paper that slowly diffuses the formic over 3 days disintegrates. The end result is instead of...
  14. Re: Anyone care to take a stab at the make of this relic?

    It's a Cowen mini.

    Re: Thinking of heading south

Sounds more like a management issue than climate issue. Winters can be hard, but the broodless period really helps with mite control

    Re: Sideliner Honey House/Equipment

When they say for "up to 100 hives" for the junior they aren't kidding. Even the senior can be a pain. Warm cappings added evenly and a warm honey house help a lot.

    Re: Sideliner Honey House/Equipment

For up to 200 hives I used:

    2xMaxant 20-frame
    Old Cowen aluminum uncapper
    Maxant clarifier
Settling tank (single wall wrapped in radiant pex)
    1" pump
    Maxant double filter
    84 gallon bottling...

    Re: Digital Refractometers

I have the Atago as well and I'm happy with it. It's not instant, it takes time to calibrate it and time for it to settle on a reading

    Re: Melting Wax

It is a single walled stainless steel tank with a heating element in the bottom. You dump your cappings in the tank. There are two valves on the side a small one and large one higher up. You open...

    Re: Melting Wax

I have Maxant 3900WPT (http://www.maxantindustries.com/wax.html). It will hold two spinner loads. The wax cleans and separates well when boiled in water. We filter through a couple of layers of...

It'll clear in a couple of days at 105C. It's often very small air bubbles that are the issue.

Re: How you manage swarm in comercial beekeping?

Figure out how many frames of brood you need say 6 weeks before the main flow so that the hives peak in population around the second week of the flow. Have them grow into the flow rather than peak...

I know a couple of beekeepers with the Vermont and both are happy. I would guess that they are pumping the honey above 70 deg though. I would ask the mfg what honey temperature range the pump was...
