    Re: Need advice see video

Tmac, One of my hives did just that this May. My mentor and I split them the next day, but they swarmed afterward anyway. We think the first swarm attempt somehow did not get the queen along for the...

    Re: swarm

Exactly so: find the reason for the swarm. I just had a hive swarm thrice after a split, and found them to be honeybound during the blackberry nectar flow. This was negligence and lack of experience...

Re: Opening hives, I get attacked

I would prefer a bee sting to a chigger under my skin. All day long....
  5. Re: Ok to use be brush to brush bees away on brood frames?

I'll never use a bee brush again--the bees got really agitated. Shaking is the way.

Re: Are these honeybees in the ground?

I sent them a link to the local swarm hotline, and the bees have been moved. You can see here:

Are these honeybees in the ground?

I got this picture from my mother in Selma, OR. My bee club in Washington thinks they are not honeybees. If honeybees, why are they on the ground, and have been for a couple days now?
  8. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

At this point, should I simply swap hive locations, moving the old queen and full hive body to the new location and bringing the split with the queen cells to the old location?
  9. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

Lovely--honey production is only an ancillary benefit; I just want healthy, well-managed hives. I hope his way works. We did see eggs in the hive, though. Hopefully she keeps laying and stays home. I...
  10. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

There were at least six fully formed queen cells. We found the queen, so they had not yet swarmed. We split the hive. My bee club mentor said had we not got to them when we did, they would likely...
  11. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

I have a mentor from my club who is coming to help me split tomorrow. I'll post back what we find.
  12. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

Understood. I am asking for help from my club, otherwise will make my best effort alone.
  13. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

Now they have settled a bit, heavily bearding on the front and side of the hive more than I ever have seen. I could not see the bees moving en masse anywhere, just so many bees flying around and...
  14. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

I haven't seen one before live, but I am pretty sure the hive just swarmed. Bees are pouring all over the entrance and thousands in the air. Is there anything to be done now besides try top track...
  15. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

The population was high last week, but I did not see capped queen cells. I believe I should be splitting soon. Should I add a third deep until I split? I wanted to split using a survivor stock queen...
  16. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

I am gathering I made a mistake in removing it in the first place. That said, I am learning and trying to recover from the error.
  17. Re: Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

Update: I got out to my side yard at lunch. I smoked them a lot underneath and scraped off the comb they had built. I put the mite board back in and sealed the slot with tape. The comb had some...
  18. Cluster of bees under hive--screened bottom board

There is a larger than fist-sized cluster congregated under the screened bottom board. The mite board insert has been removed. What could be going on there? I didn't see anything awry on the bottom...

Re: Should I split my only hive?

The weather looks warm and dry enough for me to inspect them tomorrow. I'll get an idea of stores, brood, eggs then. Thanks for the help.

Should I split my only hive?

I bought a "survivor stock" NUC last year from Old Sol Apiaries in Oregon. They have overwintered in my yard so far, and seem to be strong although I have not done a full inspection yet. Do I need to...

Re: MAQS - Full Dose /Half Dose

I suppose I will check in with my experience in a couple weeks. I had some dead bees on the entrance ramp this morning, and have seen some light bearding thus far. Long live the queen!

Re: MAQS - Full Dose /Half Dose

I just applied two strips of Formic Pro yesterday. The manufacturer does show both the 14-day and 20-day treatments as acceptable, yet gives no indication as to why one would be used over the other....
