    I don't know the eqiv. of sugar vs. honey, but I do know sugar is easier to check on a warmish day without dismantling the entire hive........you can always add more when necessary.

    We made a trial batch last night that was really good....added 1/3 cup of chopped pecans. :thumbsup:

    My wife thinks the next trial should add a bit of salt and maybe more nuts....half a cup...

    Kansas is the Sun Flower state.....well the sun flower is the state flower anyway. I can find sunflowers all around me....in ditches. along creeks, and even in corn & bean fields where herbicides...

    I've done a combination of what dudelt, dekster & JRG13 have explained....and I call that a Taranov split or artificial swarm.

    I shake the original hive onto a box with some stores & empty comb....

    I have 20 colonies.......some I got 2 full supers from......some I got zero honey from. I got a total of about 400 lbs. Selling honey @ $8 per pound ain't making me rich....only sweet. :D
