    Re: Building vs. Buying

I don't find it worthwhile to build, but I assemble precut stuff in the winter, for my use or to sell on CL.

Re: How to keep within your (newbee) limit

First year, it is not my experience that a nuc grows into more than a full hive. Second year is a different story, assuming sucess.

Re: Treated lumber for hive stand

I use treated for hive stands. I have not noticed any problem. I would not use treated for the hive bottom.

    Re: Mead?

I got one for Christmas, I am pretty sure my wife got it on Amazon for less than 30 bucks. It works fine, and seems like a nice unit.

Re: 2020 How was your winter?

It's not over yet. But today was warm (42) so I went out to OAV treat the 11 hives. All have some live bees in them. One had mice, now it doesn't. About half sent a few guards out to challenge me,...

    Raspberry Melomel

This is what I started today.

    Goal

    OG 1.100
FG: 1.015 (after back-sweetening, will probably ferment dry)
Plan: Ferment in primary to 13-14%, add fruit to start secondary. Ferment dry to...

Re: My first Melomel - elderberry mead

Working on my last bottle of this now, it is SO GOOD! Fruity taste in the mouth, with a bit of a burn in the back of the mouth after swallowing. That is about as sophisticated as I get when...

    Used equipment

I recently bought some used boxes, which I am in the process of cleaning up for my use. I have done needed repairs, will wash and scrape them, and then wash with bleach solution. (They were empty...

    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

I am going to start a dry 10-12% ABV today or tomorrow. A gallon of it will get raspberries in the secondary, and the remainder will be converted to vinager.

I use one gallon equipment, because I...
  13. Re: A new Year. What are your goals for the bees in 2020?

20 gallons of honey, first time making comb honey, and 15 hives and 20 nucs going into winter 20-21 will make me a very happy boy!

    Re: Black Friday Sales

I find sometimes that ML ships without sending me the tracking info. Once i received a shipment before I knew it had been shipped!

It has never caused me any problems, just kind of unusual.

Re: Are they nuts or hardy winter bees

My Saskatraz hive flies in the 30's, I am not sure what they are doing. Probably cleansing. The other 10 hives show no activity at those temperatures.

    Re: Using cuties in mead

I think for the first try, I would follow as closely as I could the JOAM recipe, as it is proven.

I would not includethe zest, but then I hate marmalade, so I might not be the guy to ask.

Re: My first Melomel - elderberry mead

Don't worry, I've got it covered.

I added a little citric acid (less than 1/8 teaspoon per bottle) to them, and I think it brightened them up a little. And now they also have a couple...

Re: Help. Need my Bees to move on

Surely someone would remove that one for free!

I don't recommend hitting them with the hose, that would do them in as a colony.

Re: My first Melomel - elderberry mead

Two bottles survived Thanksgiving, one is destined for Christmas, and I will attempt to age the other for a while.

    It was quite good overall!

Please post your raspberry recipe and notes when...

    Re: Black Friday Sales

You can choose USD pricing at the top of the page. Their prices look great, but I still do better (so far) with the free shipping from other US based suppliers.
