Re: Is selfishness hardwired in homo sapiens?

I've done a combination of what dudelt, dekster & JRG13 have explained....and I call that a Taranov split or artificial swarm.

I shake the original hive onto a box with some stores & empty comb....

    Re: OAV in the winter?

Winter OAVing seeks to accomplish two main things. When the hive is broodless (when all existing mites are exposed) AND when the bees are NOT in cluster (for better coverage of bees). For my area...

    I have 20 colonies.......some I got 2 full supers from......some I got zero honey from. I got a total of about 400 lbs. Selling honey @ $8 per pound ain't making me rich....only sweet. :D

Re: Provap 110 and top bar hive

I drilled the hole at a slight upward angle so that the vap devise tilts back just a bit so it doesn't contact the sidewall. It won't hang there without holding on to it. Drill several holes at...

    Re: Global Warming

I totally agree with this ^^^. "My" world will end when I die...which makes me a 'short-timer'.

Re: Provap 110 and top bar hive

Of my 20 hives, I only have two top bar hives and they both get treated through a quarter inch hole in the slanted wall......just like the langs......nothing special required for me.
  17. Re: For storing used boxes would cedar ball work as good as Moth balls?

JW, last year I was given a few supers & frames with comb that were stored (for a few weeks) with moth balls. I hesitated to use them because I could still sniff a slight odor in the boxes. I...

Re: Best way to cull a dying hive?

This ^^^ does NOT work where I live. Moths took over and destroyed comb & frames and made a huge mess for me to deal with.

    Re: Global Warming

I'm done too. It was fun while it lasted, but it appears 'they' are just as hard-headed & stubborn as we are. If we don't believe in it passionately, it ain't worth believing in. :lookout:

  23. Re: new beehive designed to stop bees from dying over winter, and to have 24/7 monito

Have you consulted the bees about this endeavor? My bees would like less hours per week to work with vacation time figured in. They also want restrictions on hive beetles & wax moth and where they...
