Sticky: Re: a little scientific involvement with TF bees.

I agree with oldtimer on it being easier to split and make increase then it is to capture swarms. I do say though that I would not have bees treatment free or otherwise if not for trapping over a 30...

I got his point. My point was that in managing bees that for some like me "good enough is good enough even if not best".

From and observational point of view, I would still think slow...

I see that patterson in his video is not a big proponent of the ideal of the fast feeding that I do in fall. His view is that it is stored so fast that the bees can not disperse pollen with it...

Orchards are above my pay grade. My apple trees have never bloomed and one looks like it has now died. I got like five pears off of my two moonglow pear. My asian pears gave a lot of little...

When I was young, we had a giant copper kettle and we would take all day taking turns adding wood and stirring to make large batches of apple butter. It was a family affair like making home...

I do winter feed a little different. I let them do what they may till oct if I think they will have at least one medium drawn by then. I have wintered hives as small as one medium. I never...

On the split I sold from a hive that I also split after the sell and that I mentioned that I had recombined with out seeing either queen or using newspaper.

It has no capped brood yet but I did...

You might be surprised come spring with the tree. If they had a chance at all, they would have still made a queen. They would have gathered stores during that process. If she made it back,...

Thanks for the kind words. My view is every dog has their day and sometimes you are up and sometimes you get beat down. I have been lucky so far.

I would plant something else but seed is very high and for plantings to do good you need to add supplements to the dirt. I planted ladino clover about 20 years ago and spread lime and such but...

The lespedeza will probably be my next bloom. I have never seen the bees on the big stuff in the field but know they work the mowed short stuff that grows in my yard.

Best bet is to hope to get bees that find some way to live through all these things like some of those wild bees in the trees seem to do. Rely on robbing screens or bees? I do realize this may not...
