    Re: Corona-19 China Beekeepers

Thanks Clyderoad. Wishing you and yours the best.

NY is in a tough patch and the light is not yet showing at the end of the tunnel. I am predicting we are a month behind you, and expecting a hard...

    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

I may just try this to see what I get. Intending to make some queen cells anyway, and this sounds easy. Just put a box in between two boxes with eggs...

Re: How much is too much drone brood?

Depends on your goals too. If I had purchased a bunch of fancy Russian mite-killing queens, I'd probably go ahead and let them make as much drone brood as they wanted, in hopes that some of that...

Yikes! Yes, it is. Plans for those cells?
  7. Re: How long after pollen starts before queen starts laying?

You pretty much pegged it. One May swarm, split to 5 hives. 3 did pretty well, one had to be late requeened and never bloomed, but is still just hanging on. One starved. So 4 surviving of 5. 3 look...

Re: How often to re-bate swarm trap

Congrats. Fun, isn't it? You won the lottery!

Did you try the Swarm Commander, or just lemongrass? What configuration of trap?
  9. Re: How long after pollen starts before queen starts laying?

No idea what breed these bees are, they are from a swarm last May, then split so crossed with whatever drones are around.
  10. Re: How long after pollen starts before queen starts laying?

Thanks everyone for the useful responses. I have been leaving the internals of the hives alone except for checking to see if there is plenty of feed on top. It's still fairly cool, 40s and lower 50s...
  11. How long after pollen starts before queen starts laying?

If pollen starts going into the hive, will the queen start laying immediately, or is there a significant gap? A little pollen here last week and quite a lot today. I am wondering when I can expect...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Unexpectedly warmed up and got sunny today, against the forecast. Bees were out thick on a feeder, and quite a bit of grey pollen going into the hives as well. The only source I know of is the...
  13. Re: Bee-L member requesting Beekeepers donate their extra N95 Masks - DON'T DO IT!!!!

I can tell you that right now hospital staff is desperate for any kind of PPE. One of my nurse co-workers is actually sewing cloth face masks at home for use at work!

    Re: Corona-19 China Beekeepers

We are all pretty grumpy due to lack of support from management. Same old same old. It's normal for hospital staff to hate their management.

A few years ago I attended a disaster training scenario...

Re: Any beekeepers sick w CV-19? SURVEY

Well, except in a few countries it's still a very rare bug, so it isn't surprising you have not heard of any particular person or group catching it. In the places it is common, Italy, Spain, China,...

Put out a trap last weekend. Perfect location, on my brother's front porch. They have lived there 20 years and most years a swarm moves into a hole in their porch roof. Hoping the smell will attract...

Re: set the 1st swarm traps, have some ???

More traps? Put a trap in the same yard where your current hive sits. Caught one of my own last summer, a hive I was sure would not swarm.

If you know where other beehives are, try to set traps...

Re: Need to move hives; how bad is that? advice?

Move them, screen the entrances so they can't get out during the day. This season in NY you are not losing much except maybe a little pollen. Use a mesh screen so they can get air but not fly. You...
