Re: Mixing a few (5-12) gallons of syrup

Check the restaraunt actions in your area. I bought a 40 qt pot with lid for around $15. Put that on a fish fryer burner and you are good to go for 8 gallons at a time.

    Re: Hornet Nest

Where is the video? Surely you did not go after a huge hornets nest armed with only two cans of Raid and did not get someone to record it!

    Re: Hornet Nest

So y'all were serious about the shotgun? A hornet stung my dog two days ago and they have been eating my lilac bush. Time to load the 870 with some birdshot, but I've got to find the nest first.
  5. Re: Still have lots of drone brood so today I grafted.

I had promised myself that last week I made my last split. Well, Sunday I got into one of my stronger hives and found a whole bunch of drones and capped drone cells. And I can always use a few extra...

    Re: modified taranov split

Salty, I alluded to the proper way when asking why the mated queen was not staying with the foragers. I also suggested the OP read up on fly backs. Lauri's explanation is the definitive guide and...

Re: Is fall treatment for varroa obligatory?

I personally do not think it would hurt. Clean the inserts and give them a very light spray with Pam. Do a single OAV treatment and count the drops after 3 days. That will tell you if you need to...

Re: Is fall treatment for varroa obligatory?

Yes. But to be fair, I typically do a 3 x 7 day program due to work. The goal is not to kill every single mite with a single round, but to keep the mite load low enough that they are not a problem....

Re: Is fall treatment for varroa obligatory?

David, I do not understand your reluctance to continue treating NOW while the bees are raising the bees that will raise the winter bees. You need to be mite free at this time to have the strong...

He is describing a slotted spring pin, also called a roll pin like these....
  13. Re: About to purchase first hive, few questions

Outside of the weight issue is extraction. My Maxant 3200 holds 6 medium frames radially, but only three deep frames tangentially. So, it would take a lot longer, about 4x, to spin out the same...

    Re: Storing unmated queens

amk, when my queens emerge into the hair rollers, I take them out and place them in the JZBZ cages and fill the tubes with fondant. They will stay alive for around three days like this in my...

    Re: Hornet Nest

A propane fueled weedburner works pretty well as long as there is no danger of setting the woods on fire.

Re: Getting comb drawn 'on demand' - MAJOR UPDATE.

LJ, I know folks feel differently about this, but I have been feeding pollen patties to keep the brood factories running in high gear. Perhaps you could resume your experiment with a little store...

    Re: Honey Bees Bearding

To the best of my knowledge, with the exceptions of mating flights, swarming, and absconding, the queen never leaves. Nor does she venture outside, even to walk around on a hot summer night.
  18. Re: Slimy Comb from Hive Beetle Larvae maybe - salvageable?

BeeBen said he had already put them in the freezer, but for anyone else, yes, freeze them first. Then, rinse them clean after thawing. In almost all cases the comb can be salvaged.
  19. Re: Smartphone app that listens to bees to tell you what health issues they have

Gee, um, thanks? Maybe I need a go fund me page?

I wonder how much propolis I am going to get on my phone until I can get the new mic?

    Re: modified taranov split

Ditch the whole fume board idea. There are much easier ways to accomplish the same thing without all the monkey motions. And, I am not sure why you want to do the equivalent of a flyback split, but...
  21. Re: Smartphone app that listens to bees to tell you what health issues they have

If you contributed to the BHGA kickstarter, check your emails. The program is available for download. I installed it on my Samsung J3 and did not have any technical issues. Hope to try it this...

    Re: Split advice needed

LL, how did things work out with moving the queen to a different nuc?

Hagane, splits are made for different reasons and that helps determine the type of split. Moving the queen is usually a swarm...
